both {bōTH} Adj.
Used to refer to two people or two things, regarded and/or identified together as in:
"both pickups"

Sorry. You kinda left yourself wide open to that one.....

Les Pauls have two volume knobs. If they are set differently you will experience a drop or increase in volume when selecting pickups. An age old method of having a particular tone tucked away for solos..

Troubleshooting is always a process of elimination. Once you determine what is working properly you can eliminate that from what is not working properly. Forget the middle position on the switch for the time being. Set the switch down (bridge) and check to see if the knobs for the bridge are working. Check both the tone and the volume knobs one at a time. The two knobs for the bridge pup are the two lower ones. Then switch to just the neck pup and check both of its knobs to see if they function. If all four knobs function for both pups and both pups sound fine then there are a number of things you can rule out as being part of the problem.
