Thanks for the input y'all ... still going to be a tough call but it's good to have a few different perspectives. In the end I might just end up flipping a coin, heads = banger, tails = flight case.

The salty air and mist from being on the ocean can and will wreak havoc on your gear. period. Based on past experience, leave the really nice stuff at home.

yeah Mike I think I'm with you. I've been looking at this as an alternative, it easily fits in the overhead of a plane, what you y'all think?

Traveler Guitar Pro Series Acoustic-Electric Travel Guitar (Steel String, Maple, Deluxe Gig Bag) $379.99

SORRY BIG PICS:

Maybe this plus a small amp? it's a little over budget, but cool, at least I'd use it again.

I would keep my prized guitar at home, and use a good cheaper guitar for the road.

Just following up on this ...

I'm currently sitting in an airport in Ft. Lauderdale Florida. I ended up going with this case by Gator - it has TSA locks:

Well, it's good and durable. A little small inside, but gets the job done.

I checked it and flew 4 hours from New York to St. Maarten. When I got to the baggage claim in St. Maarten, I noticed it was wet on the outside. Opened the case and the entire guitar was damp. It seems going from the (fairly) cold NY weather straight to a warmer climate caused major condensation.

I had packed it with underwear surrounding the 'empty' parts of the case to keep it secure. I promptly whipped out a pair of underpants right there in the terminal and wiped it down! Then I let the case sit open for a while before I left.

As it turns out, it didn't seem to cause any immediate damage - I have to figure it probably didn't become damp until at least half way through the flight. Who know actually. All I know is it plays the same, sounds the same, and wasn't cracked anywhere.

Lets see how it does on the flight back. :?

So any opinions about the moisture? No big deal, or brace for the worst over the next few months?

I would think it would be fine. If left that way for an extended period of time it would cause damage but 4 hrs should be ok. Maybe some desiccant bags in the case might help

What's your destination? I've done quite a bit of cruising and take note of the bands and their gear. Some guitarists bring some high end stuff on board, others more spartan. One of note remembering was using a 100W Fender Frontman amp, a small pedal board and a Squier Strat. Put out a pretty good sound for less than $1000 US.

FYI:I will be traveling on the Celebrity Equinox out of Fort Lauderdale on Jan 10th.

The one and only time I ever carried my guitar on a flight I had with me in the passenger cabin. That was well over a decade ago before it all hit the fan. Coming out of a cold cargo bin, onto a carrier in the humid atmosphere the day you arrrived here, you'd certainly pick up some condensation between the tarmac and the terminal. You'll likely have the same extremes of temperature and humidity if you're going to be on deck, outside of airconditioned surroundings. Keeping in tune will be a consideration too, I expect.
