I have a gig booked, they're going to fly my band out to St. Maarten in the Carribean to join up with a cruise ship so we can entertain the 2nd half of the cruise (3 1/2 days) as it returns to Ft Lauderdale Florida. All expenses paid, plus we're getting paid to play. Gotta love it.

So here's the question:

They want my guys to go to some specific places on the ship and perform with just vocal harmony and me on acoustic guitar. Now I didn't really think about this before I accepted the gig, but .... I have to take a guitar on a plane. I have a $1,200 Martin acoustic. What the f*** was I thinking?!!

Seriously though, should I just pick up a banger for this gig? What about a nylon string guitar since I don't have one, do you think that would be loud enough on a boat and unplugged? Are steel string guitars louder overall? I really don't know how to approach this one. :?

My personal opinion is buy a decent beater and soon so you have time to bond with it..and I would definitely go with steel string..Ive heard some pretty decent takamine and seen some really great used prices on them but again its just my opinion..like everyone says unless you actually hold the guitar and give it a try your really not going to know..I do know I would NOT take my good acoustic on a ship with humidity..salt water etc..

I vote you get yourself a good road case.

Seagull Maritime, whatever model suits you, with a Tric case.

lol, we already do 'Sea Cruise'

Thanks for the suggestions all, seems like a banger steel string is the way to go.

As far as guitars, the Taylor Big Baby seems a pretty loud, great sounding and good value for money guitar.

Hi Strings!

I played on a cruise once. Not professionally, I was a passenger.
Sounds like they want you guys to accommodate into small, half-open
spaces around the ship. 25 listeners approx, very casual.
Do not go without amplification.
I would borrow an acoustic-electric and suitable 25w amp.
Don´t think the nice Martin should come along.
However, I have many times had success in setting up a mic
to amplify my acoustic for small crowds, with a line matcher plug that will take
the Cannon side of the mic cable and provide you with a 1/4¨
input to the amp. It is a low amplification setup and feedback
can be managed.

Enjoy the vessel and let us know how it went! :D

its a tool. a very expensive tool. your getting paid right? for payin' gigs i always want my best tools. if it is a sentimental thing then by all means, leave it at home. i agree with the Beamer, get a good road case and protect it when your not playing. really, you are not even thinking of your guitar. did you ever think maybe it wanted to go on a cruise? did you?
hhhmmmmm.

   Really ! I guess Strings is only thinking of himself

I bought my favorite acoustic new in 76 . Sometimes I use it for small gigs . But I would never take her to a cruise - for her own good. She's getting old and seasick :( So couple of years ago , I bought her a friend, a decent Hofner acoustic with a B-band pickup , so I can also use her amplified , if necessary. Most important - she's built very solid - I am not very afraid she will be seasick :D -and , I actually prefered her over the Takamines available in the shop, which I had planned on buying. Here she is:

  Jeebus

Nice gig, Sounds like a whole lotta fun.. 8) I have a Martin DX1 and would not think twice about putting it in a sturdy case even...Road case better of course....Sturdy guitars....You aint going to damage it, highly unlikely anyway......Watch all the witch story's come out now... That said any excuse to buy more gear is spot on in books.
Takamine seems to be able to produce top quality guitars for not a lot....A 90's Solid top Takamine $400 worth is huge bang for buck in a Acoustic, The have a Martin esk feel to them i feel..... Huh......Subjective i know....... but i have played $400 taks that have better sound...And most importantly for a acoustic "Feel" and comfort to play than $1000 plus Acoustics.....You no doubt know this already but if by chance you don't try one.... 8)

Have a ball and remember....Photo's or it didn't happen.....

+1 on the road case. Invest in the case so you can use your
best gear at other paying gigs.
Play your best, sound your best with the tool that feels the best.
That way they'll rehire you. Cruise, drink, play, get laid...
In that order, write that down... Lol

I agree with both options
you can get a really nice road case to protect a guitar you already love
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/GTourDread12?utm_source=none&utm_medium=PPC&utm_campaign=none&gclid=CPPbj7b3zrICFUeRPAodSXEATQ
or you can get a really nice backup (used seagull) that you may not like as much but don't mind losing in an accident

either way you will spend about the same, so you cannot go wrong with either.

personally... I would get the beefed up case.
