recent workers comp/ back injury things have been settled and i will have a bit of a guitar budget. I'm planning to get a cheap fender strat , maybe a blacktop and modify it to my heart's content.... but i was looking at some pawn shops around here and thought since i'll have some extra money, why not start a fun project for all of us, too? So, if i buy a cheap junker strat, who wants first dibs? everyone who gets it has to change something about the guitar and take before/after pics.
and then... well, who knows? maybe it'll make it back to me, maybe not. but it will be quite an adventure, either way. :)

This could be a really fun idea if a few people get on board for sure, I'd be keen but I live the wrong side of the Atlantic so it'd be adding too many dollars to shipping. I'm so keen to do a build but at the moment too many important things I need in life are taking up my money.

I'd be very interested in this thread if it takes off though.

A similar theme was introduced when TGS's lounge build began, but the logistics were going to be too difficult to manage....

good luck anyhow

well, i was thinking that if enough people were interested, we could halfway organize by location, so everyone sends it to the next closest person, thereby reducing shipping costs as much as possible. and there's no reason for rush delivery or anything....
anyway, i thought it was a fun idea......
let me know if youre interested.

Granted, I understand the idea, I thought about doing the same thing some time back, but the logistics of ensuring that each recipient performs their build phase and ships it off to the next person within a certain time frame is the " Devil in the Details ".

I believe you will need to organize a set list of Forum members, those who have been on this Forum for some time, have experience in rebuilding these guitars to a high level, because you want this to reach completion.
I would suggest going to " The Nutter's Build Thread " and seeing who would be candidates to ask. I would prefer to see this type of project progress as much as possible hence why I suggest that you vet the potential candidates....
Under normal circumstances I would be interested, but at the moment I'm working 50 to 60 hours per week and I have a total of 6 builds in various phases....
The Telepartster I and Stratopartster IV which are complete builds ( bodies milled, routed..etc..)
The Stratopartster II and III which still have electronic and pickguard changes.
A 3/4 guitar which is ready for re-assembly
A Precision Bass which is a complete rebuild, refinish
And finally Stratopartster I which will undergo a complete refinishing ( 2nd time around ) :?

I will subscribe to this and if I can help I'll gladly pitch in but not as taking on the build at some point in the chain..
However, I am going to a lumberyard in the next couple of weeks and I am picking up a baulk of Ash, (approx.) 7' long by 2" thick by 16" wide, I only need a couple bodies out of this and of the remaining stock I may be able to either cut out One more body or piece one together and bandsaw the body to a rough Strat shape.
This is still a maybe since I really don't know the exact size of this baulk and....

Have you considered who will cover the shipping costs in each phase... :?:
Also I don't recommend a junk guitar as they usually take too much work to redo and often times the available Fender parts will not fit without routing and quite a bit of chisel and handwork.....

I was assuming whoever is interested will A: have some spare parts that they don't intend to use for anything but think would be a fun addition to this guitar, and B: would cover the shipping to the next person in the chain. . .
and completion doesn't interest me as much as journey itself. good points about only including long time members that actually have the time/ability to do these things....
i figured if we got maybe 10 to 15 people interested, and we all add something to the beater guitar, maybe at the end of the experiment it could be donated to some kind of school's music program or something... assuming it's done tastefully and is actually something someone would want to accept as a donation :)

i am sad most of the people i've been talking to quite a bit on this forum are overseas. i know they'd have some interesting additions to this project.
i'll look up that thread you're talking about and send some PMs. thanks, magnatone!
and do you have threads going for any of your builds? i'll start one on mine when I buy my personal project next week. (check will be handed to me thursday)

Im in, I think it would be fun. Parts would have to be agreed upon so things don,t keep getting changed out and it never gets done.

sweet, tbazzone... i guess we need some guidelines.... like you said, some things need to be agreed on...
1. if you want in, you have to be willing to add something and ship to the next person, you pay that shipping cost.
2. this will get really boring if everyone does the same thing. so try to think of something that hasn't been done before when you get your turn. this is open to vote, i'd think, though. if someone adds a horrific frankenstein type paint job, hopefully we can agree to let someone re-paint it :)
3. i'm buying the original guitar , so here's my official permission to keep anything you replace. but don't take things and send the guitar out without replacing whatever it is.
4. this is all working on a trust system, if you say you're in, be ready to play along, do your thing, enjoy it for a few days, and send it on.
5. the most important thing- DOCUMENTATION! to make this enjoyable for everyone we'll need pictures of what you're doing to it, and maybe some pictures of the guitar on location wherever you live, so we get the whole travelling gnome effect ;)
6. we need a common theme. maybe everyone who has a hand in this project signs the back of the body? something. let me know what you think.

that's all i can think of. If we can get at least 5 people interested, i'll pick it up thursday afternoon and send it out to Tbazzone shortly thereafter. :)

Ha! what a Sterling idea.....If i didn't live 20,000 Miles away i'd be in...... You should then start a competition like the best mod agreed on by all participating people ends up owning it or something.... :|

I'd do it. I just need parts/a task to do first.

i like that idea, orzv... what do you think, tbazzone? best mod keeps the guitar?
bux, no tasks given, just do whatever you think would be cool. and don't hold back. maybe try something on this guitar that you've been thinking about doing to one of your own - a trial run on this guitar....
you're in DC, right? if you want in, you're closer to me than Tbazzone so it would make more sense for me to send to you first. let me know.
