I've decided I want to find a guitar that was made the same year as me - 1984. But looking at the Fender serial number page it seems like it isn't possible to accurately date a guitar in this year as the serials from 1983-1985 are the same.

Is there any way to check precisely or do I just have to take my chances and risk being a year out?

I'm left handed, it's not that straightforward. Also as I mentioned above the serial system isn't accurate for that year, so I imagine many of the sellers are guesstimating.

No it's not that straightforward. The SN# E 4 span all the way up to 1988(thats what my Am Std is) finding an actual '84, you will have to do some real searching. A lot of people selling list E 4 as a 1984, but most are not. You would have to find a date inside the neck pocket for 1984, or a handwritten date on the neck. Still then they may not even be the same as many necks were produced in 1984, and eneded up on guitar bodies of later years. good luck in your quest.
