Not necessarily ahead of it's time, but an album that I find timeless is "Sticky Fingers"

If we didn't have such history of listening to this album (i.e., had we not heard "Brown Sugar" 50000000 times) it would sound fresh and exciting.

Well let me put my hipster glassess on

I was listening to Eminem way before he became famous, I know I know, I was 15 and stupid, you can't hold it against me today. My friend called me up one day and said "you have to listen to this" and played me an Internet sample of "My name is" over the phone. Now you can debate wheter "The Slim Shady LP" was ahead of its time, but me and my friends thought it was back then.

BTW here is a hipster puppy. :D

Dark Side of the Moon, no debate.

It is not only STILL ahead of it's time, but it is TIMELESS. /thread!

Very hip photo Jon!

All of the albums listed were eye openers or ear openers, lol. Surprised no one mentioned James Brown Live At The Apollo, the biggest, tightest, funky-est music ever heard, but then, like every one has said "there are so many to choose from starting in the 50s through to right now". I will go with euphoria480 for the Mothers, for me it was Absolutely Free, the most unsettling excitingly interesting (at least to this teenager listening) album of music or musical interpretations, I still can't define it. It was just out there and probably still is.

How about John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, Featuring Eric Clapton?...the first time someone plugged a Les Paul into a Cranked Marshall amp and made Blues Rock History!

That combination was so ahead of its time, it became THE Rock Rig for most of the late 60's and 70's! Heck even Retroverbial did a 30 year detour on a Les Paul :!:
