My pics would be " Fragile " by Yes
" Scherehazade " and " Prologue " by Renaissance
Just about anything from Todd Rundgren but more specifically " A True Star A Wizard "
The soft white underbelly... better known as Blue Oyster Cult, their 1st album in 1972 and " Tyranny and Mutation "
Uriah Heep " Salisbury "
Savoy Brown " Hellbound Train"
Black Oak Arkansas first two albums...Southern rock flips off the Baptists... An early version of Rap before it was even known as such, let alone from a group from the Ozarks.
Jethro Tull " Aqualung " " Thick as a Brick " " A Passion Play "
Queen " I, II and Bohemian Rhapsody "
Kansas
UFO " Lights Out"
Santana " Abraxas "
Journey " On a Saturday Night "

Point is there are just too many great bands over the years who have come out with a musical statement that left everyone else scratching their heads....

Wore the grooves off the vinyl, it was the first cd purchased with the first cd player.
I don't know how many groups went back to the studio to re-work albums in progress after hearing this for the first time.

Time moves on, just that factor renders it next to impossible to list One album only. To do so means that one is dismissing anything else that would contradict that one choice.
Just thinking in those terms would have me only listening to " Schmilson Nilson " for the rest of my life...  ......They're coming to take me Away.... :?

There are just too many musical genre's ( hate that word  ).

Say I pick Queen's 1st album, which was seminal in establishing a multilayered sound in a then (1970's) hard rock/metal format. At it's release time, no other band sounded like Queen, live in concert they did not disapoint, (which cannot be said of a lot of bands whose studio albums were great but fell flat on their face's in a live setting) this criteria also has to weigh in to the final decision.
In contrast to this I pick Yes's " Fragile"...I'm now in progressive rock and even though technical musicianship reigns, the two are distances apart.....
Another contrasting pick would be Jeff Beck's "Blow by Blow" or it's followup " Wired "
Again I'm in a completely different spectrum, a rock guitarist completely at home in a jazz influenced setting. This one set a few people back on their kister....
Should absolutely include Dire Straits 1st, which in the middle of a raging Punk scene, Sex pistols, The Clash, New York Dolls ( Glam Punk ) dared to introduce us to a sound founded on Chet Atkins, Gene Vincent, James Burton.
David Bowie deserves a mention here, if for nothing more than a Chameleon infused style.
I still would never guess that SRV is behind " Let's Dance "
Speaking of Chameleon's, gotta include Michael Jackson's " Thriller " not everyone's cup of tea but again EVH on one of the track's.... Hello... :?:
As far as Van Halen...nuff said...intro's are pointless. which leaves me in a completely different realm, Yngwie Malmsteen's took baroque composer's and intricately sent everyone back to the woodshed....Love em or Hate em, one cannot deny the technical playing and the critics be burned at the stake, the guy can play the blues if need be...( jab )..
Steve Vai's " Flexable ", Zappa's protege, here's another that set everyone back to the woodshed..
On a quieter note, Crosby Stills and Nash, they pretty much ushered in an entire genre of country rock down from Laurel Canyon, a list way too long, just that CSN is pretty much the herald bearer of this era/area....which leads me to Slash... :?:  Yep.. he's from that neck of the woods and Guns and Rose's " Appetite For Destruction " set a terminal landmark that only flat liners could upstage....

I could keep going but I'll mention The Beatle's, in the context of ushering in constant pop replay's of silly love songs..... " Abbey Road " would be my choice......

Good considerations , 53 - I 100% agree with you . All those mentioned , deserves it - they are remarkable in their own ways . Personally I think Malmsteen is a bit frustrating to listen to , but he is obviously good - and a landmark!
I love Yes - and in addition I could mention I'm a huge fan of the old Genesis , with Peter Gabriel & Steve Hacket
But I think , still , if ONE album pointed out the direction of the following years , it was ''Abbey Road''
Edit: I will also mention Andy's contribution , King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King !
It is extraordinary and fantastic.
I guess the bottom line would be-all of us love music . and most of us can dig many styles - as long as it contains some inspiration and musical value :D

While writing the previous post I was thinking of Genesis, for me " Nursery Cryme " was my intro to Genesis... Abbey Road I still listen to every so often, most of the other stuff by the Beatle's I never could wrap around it, it was just too commercial pop and some of the lyrics just

For me to pick One album out of a collection of over 600 LP's and 300 CD's that I have is just not possible since my musical tastes are so varied. Yesterday was a day of Clapton, both in figuring out some tunes for future rehearsals/jams and just listening. The day before was a complete classical day with Anne Sophie Mutter, Rachel Podger and Mstislav Rostropovich...
Today will be as yet unknown....

Steve Vai's Flexable. I like it, but still can't really get into it.

I really like a lot of the albums mentioned here. The Beatles were continually pushing the envelope in the '80s and Zeppelin in the '70s. As a teen I was amazed with the composition and execution King Crimson's In the Court of the Crimson King with Fripp, Lake and company.

For me it was these: In the '60s it was Jimi's Electric Ladyland that I thought broke new ground. Several years later it was Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. I didn't experience what I thought was another game changer until I discovered Radiohead and OK Computer. I'm always looking to discover (or create?) the next big thing. Anyone have any leads?

I can't argue with ANY of the records previously mentioned being ahead of their time! They all certainly are! Can anyone think of recordings that are more recent? I have liked the last 3 recordings by Radiohead, a few by the Mars Volta, the Flaming Lips....not much else. The funniest thing as all three of those bands are what I would call "Retro Futurist". Healthy nod to the 60s and 70s, while embracing the technology of today.

Historically, I agree with the people saying Are You Experienced. Jimi Hendrix virtually reinvented rock and roll. As for something more modern, I would say Revelations by Audioslave. When I listen to that album, somehow everything else seems dated.
