Def Leppard/Hysteria is the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread.

Dark Side of the Moon is a good one.

And there was Steppenwolf. Oddly enough, the Pusherman was written by Hoyt Axton in 1968, a country writer.

The soundtrack album by Walter/Wendy Carlos for A Clockwork Orange had many sounds on it that were new to most of us back in those days.

i LOVED that film...unfortunately i wasn't around back then lol//,but saw it several years ago...really compelling writing....definitely a cult classic

Ah-ha!

Come to think of it, Stanley Kubrick often did interesting things with music in his films. In 2001 there is a scene where the monolith is discovered on the moon and suddenly starts blasting its signal out to Jupiter, which they did with some odd, modernistic choral music on the soundtrack. After seeing it in the cinema (I was around back then...) I went home and asked my dad what that music was and he told me it was Lux Aeterna by Ligeti.

Got me started on a whole different area of listening. Might be worth a try, for anyone as wants to give their ears a challenge...

Cheers - C

Led Zepplin still hard to believe recorded in 1968 and released in1969 and my second place would probably be Jethro Tull Aqualung..

I'll throw my hat in the ring with "Operation Mindcrime" by Queensryche.

These guys paved the way for the layered sounds that were to come in the mid 80's almost a decade later.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I'm a big Pink Floyd fan, but I think as fas as "Ahead of it's time" this is my pick:
