Check the box for "Yes" on this one. What a show!
Some technical difficulties early on... near disaster, but they got it figured out, audience was patient, and Stevie blew it on out!
Actually pulled off an acoustic version of "Dwarf Nebula Processional March".
Absolutely spectacular show! Jimi played with his teeth way back when, Steve whipped out his tongue and was wailing out some high feedback on the low E string.

Well worth it if the tour comes your way.

Steve is always amazing, I've seen him in small clubs and touring with Whitesnake back in the day. He's a real entertainer.

I used to work for a medical supplier in Carle Place, Long Island where Steve Grew up. One day the teacher from 'The Audience Is Listening' came in to our showroom. She was really his teacher when he was in elementary school.

Also, one day I saw a prescription come in via fax, and noticed the last name, Vai. I figured I was in Carle Place and Vai is a pretty uncommon name. So I called to fill the order and it turned out to be Steve's dad. :D

I'm a big Vai fan!

Sorry to blow your enthusiasm about Steve's "tongue trick" but it's just show.
The feedback tones are from another string.
When he touches the low e-string and slides back and forth on the string, he actually uses the trem simultaneously to affect the feedback tone provided by another unfretted string.

It is physically impossible to play pinch harmonics or feedback tones by constantly touching the string, whether it's a finger or a tongue.
You either have to fret the string to get the feedback or you have to touch the string very, very shortly to produce pinch harmonics.
The string must be able to vibrate freely for that, which is not the case when you steadily touch it with your tongue and even slide your tongue up and down along the string.

It can be perfectly seen on the "Live at the Astoria" DVD.

However, it looks incredibly cool when he does that! :) 8)

Some friends of mine have seen his show when he was in the NYC area. Both were raving about it.

Yes, Vai's shows are INCREDIBLE!!

I've seen him live in Stuttgart/Germany about 4 years ago.

It amazes me every time again to see, how much passion and feeling he puts into his playing.
It's pretty hard to keep people's attention when you're a solo guitar player.

I'm a big fan of Satriani as well but he just stands there and plays. Period.
Fantastic to listen, boring to watch.

With Vai it's like Steve's heart talking through his guitar and the guitar uses his face to underline the feelings expressed through the guitar.

Some of the stuff he plays is just way beyond my horizon
