Does anyone know of a good and reliable resource where you can purchase unfinished guitar bodies? I am a graphic designer and obsessed guitar player and I want to try my hand at guitar "design". I am mainly looking for telecaster style bodies as they have a LOT of surface area to play with. Thanks in advance everyone!

Thanks for all the advice and links everyone! I am kind of on a quest to gather as much information as possible as far as suppliers, etc goes so keep the advice coming. A follow up question: I know of one or two but does anyone know of any places where you can buy paints specific to guitars? I prefer a can that I can of paint that I can put into an airbrush as opposes to some of the colors that are in spray cans, although I am not opposed to those either.

ReRanch has several dyes that you can mix. They may have paint in cans other than spray but im not sure. Ive only used the nitro spray cans.

Hi ProperVillain, welcome to the Forum.

Far as nude bodies goes, I don't think anyone mentioned http://www.wdmusic.com / http://www.wdmusic.co.uk yet, so I'll just throw that in, in case more sources are useful.

Regarding paint. As suggested above, Stew-Mac are good for instrument finishes, both nitrocellulose lacquer and waterbased options. They offer transparent and opaque dyes for both, so you can achieve whatever you're looking for. I'm guessing you'll want to thin either type of carrier a certain amount for use with an airbrush.

However, we don't know where you are, but Stew-Mac won't ship nitro outside the US so that may be a problem for you.

No matter, there are other possibilities. Behlen are another long-standing and well-respected name in this area. They are based both sides of the Atlantic and can be bought where other brands can't. And they have a very fulsome range of lacquers in various formulations, and many types of colourant. Here's their instrument lacquer, available as you see in both waterbased and solvent based (which means nitrocellulose) variants:

http://www.behlen.co.uk/Merchant2/merch ... Code=MUSIC

If you click "colouring" from the menu on the left you will find that they have many different ranges for getting what you want - though their catalogue can be frankly a little confusing. If I were you I'd take a look at their .pdf of colourants, here -

http://www.behlen.co.uk/media/Behlen_Co ... t_2011.pdf

- and then email them if you are unsure of exactly what will mix with what. I've always found them friendly and helpful with information. And in my experience the product is excellent and highly recommended.

Where I live in the UK Behlen materials can be bought direct from that website, which is very convenient. In North America they supply through distributors: information at their US website:

http://www.hbehlen.com

I'm writing all this because Behlen are sort of an industry standard in instrument finishing, so if that's what you want to get into you need to know about them.

Anyhow...

May I ask what sort of paint you currently use with your airbrush? It might be that it'll work perfectly well on a guitar body, if you prep it appropriately.

Lastly, I do hope we get to see the results of your guitar painting! :D

Good luck - C

If you're having paint mixed to match a standard Fender formula or color chip you may find Curtis Novak's information useful......

WOW! Thanks for all of the advice everyone! To answer a few questions this is a project that I am just starting up. I'm in the "finding suppliers and materials phase". It's something I hope will lead to a small side business but I want to test the waters first a bit. I need to get my as-yet-untested guitar painting technique up to snuff before I can really sell anything. I have a few rough sketches of designs and I am even toying with including custom pick guards. Although that part gets a little tricky as I would be selling the body (and maybe pick guard) only and whoever would (theoretically) buy this would need to figure a way to cut holes in the guard for their particular brand of pickup.

As far as the airbrush goes, I haven't tried anything yet. I know whatever I do first will be a pure experiment with, most likely, mixed results at best but that is always part of the fun:)

Again, thanks again everyone! The Fender community rules!

There is also Allparts http://www.allparts.com/
I found their online prices to be MSRP but if you order through a local store that deals with them you can usually get it for about 70% of that.

another is http://www.musikraft.com
