Well its been 2 1/2 years since I jammed with anyone. I finally got a drummer friend to get a jam going this weekend. He's bringing his bass player buddy too! I can't wait! I have a feeling we are all going to be a bit rusty. I myself haven't played much during the past 2 1/2 years, but I don't care.
The only question now is Jazzmaster or Strat? I haven't had much time on my Jazzmaster, but my Strat sounds sooo good through my amp!

The last time I jammed was before my son was born. He is now almost 2 1/2. Then we had a daughter last November. I've been elbows deep in dirty diapers for so long I hardly have a chance to play around the house. If I do play, my son always says "daddy play nee nee" which is what he calls Folsom Prison Blues, because of the intro I guess.

Well, I finally got to jam, but it didn't go smoothly. We were supposed to jam between 11am and 1pm. I texted the drummer at 9am to get his address. At 10:30 I called and left a message. At 11:15 while I was making lunch I got a text to jam ASAP. I finished cooking and eating and got there around 12:20. I set up my gear, I brought my Jazzmaster which I haven't played much. I try to use the rhythm circuit- nothing. Flip to the lead circuit. Bridge is good, no neck pick up. I'm a little mad because I have had this guitar looked at twice for this issue. Oh well at least I have the bridge pickup. We start playing. I hear a little ping and my high E has slipped out of tune. I tune up again, start playing and ping! The E is out again. Tune up again and pop! Broken E string. I did not bring any back ups. I guess I'm rockin' 5 strings now. We jam a bit, try some cover tunes and then the bass player says "its one o'clock, I have to leave". I stayed to play a bit more with the drummer. He gets me an electric acoustic to play. The battery is dead, so it won't amplify. Change the battery, tune up and strum a couple of chords and the whole thing is out of tune, Tune up again and the same thing. He says this the guitar hasn't been played in over a year. No wonder!
There was talk about another jam sometime, so if it happens I hope it goes better than this one!

Then I guess you'll bring your strat  That jam seems to be quite similar to some I've been to

I took that Jazzmaster back to the shop to get it looked at as it is still under warranty. I took it to a different location because I DO NOT want the tech who has seen it twice and dinged it once to touch my gear ever again!

These are the growing pains of getting back into it. Nothing out of the ordinary there.

I take it the E string was the high E (1st) ?
Did it break at the bridge? Were there any curls in the wire at the break point?

High E - at the bridge, The ball end of the string broke completly off. Yes there was a curl.

Stock strings  . The curl may be from where the string was wound on the tuner.

Geeeez, isn't it annoying when you make plans to jam and take it seriously enough to be on time (and you are REALLY looking forward to it), then someone of the group thinks it's not as important to be on time, so you end up starting late and then to add insult to injury someone has to leave early. Geeez I hate those days, and I too have had a few of them.

So it was likely a Fender 250 then. That's unusual. Fender usually doesn't have that problem. I have encountered it with D'Addario strings on a number of occasions and have since quit buying them altogether. What happened is the string, where it wraps around the ball and then is twisted back around the string, slowly slipped. The twist was either not tight enough or not long enough. The twist didn't have sufficient grip and it slipped which slowly caused the twisted part of the string to slide around the ball effectivly adding length to the main section of the string. As it slips the grip is further weakened due to increasingly fewer twists left and it continues to slip more frequently until it loses all grip and springs out of the saddle sounding like it broke. If you search the floor where it happened or in your bridge you will find the ball all by itself with no string wrapped around it.

I found the ball right away. I have never broken a string this way before. So I hope you are saying that the issue was a bad string and not my tuners.

Yes. If the ball was found without any string on it then it happened on that end of the string and just the way I suggested.
