I posted this on a busier forum, but blahh. I trust you guys and gals better.

But I just can't nail down why! Don't get me wrong, it's a great guitar but it just doesn't seem to have as much "Reach" as my last American Strat and I'm trying figure out why besides the obvious that's it's not a Strat.

The first thing that comes to mind, is it the pups? Is it the light weight with the extra resonance due to the lighter wood and the way the neck is mounted?

Sort of bothers me that a guitar of this quality is letting me down only after a few months, or maybe I'm expecting too much from it. My main complaint is that I can't go from the thin shimmery sound to a warm deep tone no matter what I do.

My amp is a DRRI and I'm looking for input help. Maybe I can save it.

Thanks.

Second post.

BTW, two things I'm gonna try. I have these Trem Springs on the way.

http://www.rawvintage.com/eng/item_springs.php

And then change strings from 10's to 12's.

BTW, the distortion sounds pretty good in that vid, but I play clean and my amp doesn't have a dirty channel.

Go to about 5 minutes or so and hear the tone. I think it's just way to thin.

I feel the same way about Carvin guitars. A friend whom I jam with once in a while has a really beautiful Carvin Strat style guitar with all the nice trimmings but it just ain't "got it" when it comes to true Strat tone. My guitars beat the hell out of it for tone.

I dunno... Maybe all there is to say about these things is that only a Strat is a Strat?

I think your right man.

Here is what I'm talking about. A Strat on a DRRI.

It's got the Chinga Linga sound, with some depth.

Yep.

Not so many years ago, before Fender had their own site and they were supporting Chris Greene's site, there were a number of threads about "how to get a (such-and-such) artist's tone". A Fender rep, forget who, piped up several times and said, "If you want Fender tone you have to start with Fender equipment."

Sounds like ,from the video, it is voiced to have a lot of treble response with flat mids. That combined with a DRRI may be giving you treble overload. Heavier strings should help some. You may consider a mid boost kit or similar. Worst case (expense) scenario would be a pickup swap I think to fatten it up. Sounds like it has good base and treble already, just flat or slightly scooped mids. If you like it otherwise and it plays/ keeps tune well, it would be worth it.

Add: It is a very modern sounding guitar. The HDR switch sounds like a 6db preamp to excite the sound some. You could swap that out for a voiced preamp or eq. Doesn't EMG make some stuff like that for about 40 bucks or so?

John Mclaughlin makes a Godin sound great, just as Allan Holdsworth makes a Carvin sound great. I guess the same can be said of famous artists that weild an Ibanez. So then, these guitars are capable when highly processed.
For my part, I could never work with a guitar that does not sound heavenly when plugged straight to the amp circuit. And so only a Fender guitar is left standing.
Sounds like the instrument in question is too light to give you the tone depth you want.
It would seem like it has a good resale value.

Only in recent years did I get interested in tone, and that has changed everything.
Artists like SRV and Robert Cray have transformed my appreciation and expectations about what a guitar can and cannot provide. Aquiring a CS Strat was an 8 month process, and I payed 800 dollars just in duties to bring the instrument home. Things had to go and stuff. As a musician, I have never been happier. Currently, I am not affecting the instrument, it is affecting me, transforming the way I approach it as I marvel at the tone response and craftmanship.

Good luck on your tone search, what an exciting adventure!

On second thought, I think I would leave the HDR alone and switch the pickups to the same ones you had in the guitar you liked so much. You may not even need to change the humbucker. Or if you don't like the humbucker even in parellel mode you could put a overwound fat sounding p90 back there. I think that might work. I would also make sure the cap values are the same as the other guitar. Who knows, maybe 250 caps and volume would warm it up nice.

I doubt changing pups will make up much difference with this guitar. It's a finely tuned machine thoroughly designed for a certain purpose, and it does it very well. However as I say, for a "Specific Purpose". It's not a well rounded guitar but for what it does, it's up there with mid to high end PRS's.

If I had a Strat, a Paul and a SG, the Godin would never leave my stable.

I guess I have always been a Strat guy.

I feel that way about a number of guitars. One trick ponies. Not many have the versatility of the Strat.
