Some of my Fenders have two stickers on the neck plate. One is a trash can with an X through it, which obviously means to recycle the guitar instead of throwing it in the garbage. The other sticker says "CE" in an odd font. What is the meaning of "CE?"

If I'm not mistaken "CE" is a form of regulatory certification. I believe an item needs to qualify for it to be eligible for sale (import to) the European Union, and possibly other regions.

My understanding is that it's the global identifier for "Consumer Electronics" which makes some sense since the stickers are frequently seen on stereo gear, TV's, ghetto-blasters, and anything else that requires electricity for its operation.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

CE = "Conformité Européenne" and translates from French to English as "European Conformity."

Basically it means the product probably won't hurt you when used as intended, contains nothing environmentally hazardous and doesn't emit enough electromagnetic radiation to cause problems with other electronics.

I don't think the old Dumont brand TV I had in the 60's would have gotten a CE sticker. I had to swat the side of that thing so often I sprained both wrists! To this day when I whack a piece of gear to try to make it work I call it "The Dumont Adjustment." Oddly enough I ran into a guy who used to be a TV cameraman and remembered using a B&W Dumont studio TV camera, and guess what? It periodically required "The Dumont Adjustment" also!

The crossed out trash can symbol means that there are some parts in the product that can not be recycled. It can not just be put in with household recycling materials but must be treated seperately. Here is a webpage about recycling symbols.

Recycling Symbols

This symbol also means don't put this guitar in the bin if you have finished with it, send it dirctly to me and I will take care of it for you.
