Fellow Pink Floyd fans!

A well known pop singer from Turkey named Serdar Ortac has covered Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall pt.2 in one of his concerts. First things first here is a video of it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrdbP-EcP6g

ITS HORRID, and above all how can he get away with such thing? What about copyrights etc.? What can be done about it except for feeling disgust for his action?

Thanks

Bands have been butchering covers for ever. It looks like he has a huge crowd that seems OK with it.

This was my band before work caused me to replace myself. I still sit in from time to time, I sure miss it, but hopefully this cover fixes your ear, minus the camera microphone it doesn't sound bad.

As far as the copyright goes he can do it all he wants live, but he can't release a recording of it or perform it on a broadcast program without clearance from the composer or whoever presently owns the rights to the song.

Oops someone recorded it on video already. There is a rule about not posting copyrighted material on Youtube. The music and lyrics are copyrighted. Youtube is usually pretty quick to pull videos after copyright infringement reports. This really shouldn't have been posted online in the first place.

Each time a popular song gets covered on American Idol, The Voice, etc....cha-ching for whoever has the copyrights.

The composer doesn't have to allow you to use his song either. A friend is involved with an unnamed artist in a management capacity. This artist ordinarily does only original material. Without clearance this artist spent a lot of studio time working up an urban rap style cover of a song that had been a country hit 20 years ago with new verses but the original chorus was pretty much intact. It was ready to go to mastering. Done. The composer declined clearance after hearing an mp3 of it. I heard the same track, it was awesome and would have been a crossover hit. I thought it was a great modern take on the classic. The artist's plan was to donate 100% of the proceeds (if any) from the track to Tennessee flood relief. The composer lives in Nashville and he still said no. That song, as good as it was, will never-ever see the light of day again.

There was a time when doing covers of a song did not require a note for note, effects for effects reproduction of the recording. Tastes and technology have marched forward in time and the expectations of audiences have changed. Bands such as Layne's, capable of offering up a performance pleasing to the ear, without investing in a king's ransom's worth of Fender and Pete Cornish inspired gear, are to be congratulated. Taking it one step removed, there's even a following of Tim Renwicks' guitar solo in "The Wall" on the 'Pulse Tour'. I nearly fell over when I came to learn that it wasn't Gilmour playing that second part, the transition and tone being so even.

Some years back, when I was still on the dental faculty at NYU, one of my students asked me if I'd want to perform in the annual talent show with a few like minded students. I had done that once many years before with a blues band the students had put together with along another faculty. They wanted to to do "Comfortably Numb". I told him straightaway that IMHO we did not have enough time and tide to get it right by the date of the show.

Sour though it may be, the Turkish band should be given credit for the attempt, and being inspired enough by Gilmour and The Floyd's work to want to give it a try.

ZZ that is very kind of you! I think we only paid a Princes ransom!!! I want to get things close, but we do not strive for exactness. For us it's the performance as a whole. Some of us are very sound oriented, and my good friend and fellow guitarist is way more into his lighting than i am into my sound, but it all comes together, and it is the fun we have and giving the crowd a fun night that keeps us doing it.

That's what it's all about, isn't it. There's a band, Project Floyd, which I've seen perform at Five Towns College, in Dix Hills, Suffolk County, NY. The house there is about 320 [a converted middle school, in part]. It's an intimate venue and the audience is seated. They are a note for note cover band and work hard at getting it right. They have license to use the Dark Side of The Moon videos which adds mightily to the performance.

I've always had to keep in mind that a concert/club performance venue and a private party/club/dance venue are two different audiences and one has to choose the play list carefully. A lot of rock music was composed solely for a listening audience and there isn't much for the dance floor that calls for Floyd.

Rock on

I moved to fla. late '97 for a more affordable life. I don't have to tell you of the expense of living on Long Island! I'm from Shirley, 5 minuites from Fire Island. Planing a trip up for some Striper fishing next month.
