Pros: You guys are really tight, especially for a first show... and the music has a good driving energy to it! I think this band has great potential!

Cons: I'll keep them to myself, unless you ask specifically... but it's in my nature to pick out the bad with the good... I sometimes have problems voicing my findings in polite terms though, and usually I'm talking with guys I know, in person... due to the nature of the internet, I don't want you to take offense to my personal observations and opinions, so I'll keep quiet unless you really want to know! That's my disclaimer... you have been warned, so if you really want to know my full, honest, and un-edited opinion, that's on you, LOL!

Overall, I did enjoy the videos, just so you know.

you can go ahead and give me the cons. i have a feeling i know what you are going to say. but in all honesty, i like to hear what peoples honest opinions are.

Well, I'll try to keep it short and to the point (but I probably won't succeed, LOL!)... first thing that stood out to me was the singer's clean singing. He tends to be flat often, sometimes flat enough to be just plain out of key. That can be bad monitors, nerves, alcohol, or perhaps just a lack of pitch control... or any combination thereof. I would reccomend to him that he listen to recordings of you guys, both live, and from practices, and try to see where he's off. If he has trouble hearing himself live, he might want to try using one earplug. That helps you hear what you're singing much better if your monitors suck, but it takes some getting used to, so he should try it at practice first. He definitely has a good voice, he just needs to rein it in and get it under control... once he does, he'll be a real powerhouse of a frontman. ;)

Second is a personal pet peeve... but I seriously doubt your guitar player is going to need all of those ppicks he has wedged under his pickguard. That looks a mess, and makes him look unprofessional, at least IMO. Same as not trimming strings after a string change... just something that bugs me personally. If that's just "his thing", then so be it... But if it's just a matter of having nowhere else for them, have him set up a mic stand with a pick holder, check the mic during soundcheck, and then not use it. At least he has a place for his picks that doesn't look silly, LOL! Even better, it's incentive to start singing backups!

By your user name, I'm assuming you're the bass player? If so, you and the singer should try and move around more. You seemed to be the most still out of the group, but your singer definitely stays in his own little square of the stage too. Stage size can be (and often is) limiting, but you should always try to use what you have to the fullest potential... Your guitarist and drummer are both out-performing you guys by a hefty margin. Either you two need to step it up, or they need to tone it down... and in that genre, more energy is always better than less. The more you move around and get into what you're playing, the more the crowd will get into your band. Also, exaggerate any moves you do make... they feel three times as big to you as they look to the crowd. I've watched videos of myself jumping on stage where in the moment I just knew I got two feet of air and five seconds of hangtime, but on video, I only looked like I was hopping over a sidewalk crack, and barely made it. If you don't feel like you're overdoing it, you're not doing it enough... If it feels like you must look ridicculous, you're probably on the right track. :)

My final critique would be on overall image... you should, as a group, discuss what you percieve your band image to be, and then come up with a set of rules or a "dress code" for performances. Once you have this in place, go shopping for stage clothes... as a band if possible... and try to have at least a few shirts and pairs of pants that are only worn for shows. It may sound silly, but putting these clothes on will feel like suiting up for the big game every time you're getting ready for a show, and it WILL make you perform better.

If you watch the pros in your genre, or any genre of heavy music for that matter, they always look like they're intensely into the music, and move around constantly on stage. That takes work, it's not subconscious... They may not admit it, but many of those moves are choreographed to a degree, and happen at the same place in the same song every night. You guys have obviously put some work into writing the songs... The next step is to put some work into developing a show. That includes the visual performance aspect, and fine tuning things like the vocalist's pitch issues, and perhaps between song banter too. It wasn't a full show video, so I don't know how he stacks up in that department...

I think you guys are on the right track, especially for a new band. I wouldn't have taken the time to write all this if I didn't... Take this criticism and use as much of it as you can to make your band a stronger unit... or shrug it off as just one guy's ramblings on the internet, since that's really all it is, LOL!

I'd like to see some footage of you guys in six months to a year from now... if that was your first show, there's nowhere to go but up, and you're not doing all that bad so far to begin with!

Thanks for sharing the vids, and for reading my BS too, LOL!

yes i agree the singer is flat A LOT. he knows it. this is his first band singing in.

my guitarist insists on having his picks there. we all told him dude...it looks really cheesy..But he is very stubborn and he just doesn't care about stuff like that. lol

Yes, that is funny you say that i didn't move around much...i thought i was jammin, then i looked at the video and i was like...damn it!! lol i look like a lump on a log. Yes it does take practice to move around. and i am really working on it as we speak. I just need to let go and just go for the gold. and move around more. its going to take practice.

DRESS CODE!!! ive been telling these guys we need to dress like we are on the same team for a while now...fact is, they wont listen. they are like..who cares how we dress...its about the music. which is true..however i will agree 110% dressing alike is huge. and we should definitely do it more. and your idea is great! to have like actual band uniforms. great idea honestly

that's all of what i was thinking too man! thanks for being honest! We just need more time to grow as a band. i think we are going to be just fine. but im actually glad you saw all the things that i am seeing too. so thats good..its not just me!

Great minds think alike, I suppose!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go run a power drill into my brain after watching that crappy Floyd cover in the other thread. :?

It's bedtime-thirty anyway... I'm out!

I dig the music. The only thing it's missing is a grindy bass.

A peavey Grind bass? or just a dirty sound out of my bass?

If you mean a dirty sound or distortion, then we are definitely not on the same page my friend. I believe bass should be a simple dish. i like a nice clean bassy tone. I am not a fan of bass distortion or bass effects. I like my bass simple and clean.

You are lucky to have a guy tell it like it is exactly how it is. That guy is Mcgyvercasterguy. Good going McVcstr! I would agree 100%. The bands that have staying power and that really want to succeed do the stuff you wrote about. Been there done that and guess what? It freakin' works dude! Our band did that stuff and we became the top paid club band in town. Offers coming over the phone.

As far as the guitar player not trimming the strings-- I didn't notice that BUT if they are real long and flop around they WILL make the guitar go out of tune easy. That's not a good thing. The very first and most noticeable thing I heard was the flat singing. You have to take care of that first. Most non musicians can't tell if the drummer blows or the bass player sucks or if the guitar player is a "wanna bee" BUT they can sure tell if the singer blows chunks---- However your singer does not hurl against a wall-- he just needs a little work on the pitch. Killer light shows help a band too. Good luck !!!!
