I know, these shows typically get a bad rap around here (American Idol and such). But the other day, I was watching a show called The Voice or something of the sort, and you know what? Some of these people really do have talent. The thing i actually do like about this show is the fact that it's about the singers voice, it has nothing to do with image. Not only is the concept good, but they have competent judges.
There used to be a show in Canada called DisBand I think, and i actually quite enjoyed that one as well. They would take a struggling band, and give them a "guru" to help them make it in the music industry. After a week of work with the mentor, the band would perform infront of 4 judges. The judges would decide if the band has potential to make it in music, or if they should "dis-band".

Does anyone else actually enjoy some of these shows?
I understand not liking American Idol and X Factor, but shows where it's the music that takes priority seem respectable IMO.

I have heard some of the best singers in the WORLD on those shows!!! I can't tell you how many grumpy geezers have told me "NAW I don't watch that crap!!" but I think of it this way= I'm a musician I love music and singing. It's what I do. Hey guess what? I'm going to check the shows out. I heard a great singer last night on the Voice and that's usually my least favorite of the bunch. I'm glad someone posted something positive about the Music shows.

I DO think the worst thing is when they hi- lite the terrible singers on American Idol but I noticed last year they really cut down on that. I usually turn it off when one of those people get on there whos Mom told them they were good way back when and they just blow and have always blown- you can tell. HA! :D

Yeah, i'm not really sure either.
I had watched a couple of episodes over the past couple of years, but never really remembered the name of the show. I remember last year there was a great rock singer, i think i saw him do his own version of a Britney Spears song and a rap song as well.

I thought that this topic might be about Shindig or Hullaballoo
or Bandstand or Don Kirschner's Rock Concerts or Palladia or AXSTV. :?

There was one a few years ago on channel 4 called Orange Unsigned Act which I liked. It was bands and singer-songwriters and all sorts of different groups, which was what I liked about it. Its actually how I heard of Tommy Reilly, who is one of my favourite singer-songwriters, and he also won in the second series.

One of the best performances I've seen by a musician on TV. Loved everything about it.

http://youtu.be/hLyI1Kt4qaM

That being said, my girl watches the show. I'm not a huge fan, and I wouldn't call Xtina competent at much besides singing and eye-candy. As a coach she's shown little ability other then to try to give people music that either sounds like what they are already doing, or what she likes. I once heard her utter the phrase..."So you want it to start out A Capella with the guitar?" She's musically brain dead.

However, the other three I will agree all know their stuff. They are all very competent at their craft, and at developing talent.

I watched Howard Stern on that show he was a few times, but he was the only reason  I don't care for all the drama and hype they surround everything with.

"Hey, Hey, we're the Monkees!"
I used to watch the Kirschner show all the time. Saw the Doobies when Skunk Baxter was sitting on a stool after recently breaking his leg. I'm pretty sure it was shortly after MacDonald joined the band... (liked 'em better before). Great show though.

The wife is an Idol fan... so I'm usually forced. However, I'll have to admit, there was some incredible talent last year. That Ledet kid singing "It's a Man's World" had me in tears... yeah... holy smokes

MIDNIGHT SPECIAL vs. DON KIRSHNER'S ROCK CONCERT. Who won?

I think Midnight Special was better because of Wolfman Jack. He was the original rock and roll animal.

We used to have a tv show in Cleveland, At first it was called the big five show, then got change to Upbeat. I remember one of regular bands was called "The Grasshoppers,' in which Ben Orr was the bass player singer. Many top 60's bands were on that show. I wonder if its on Youtube?

Back when MTV actually played music and had shows about musicians...(sigh!)...they used to have great "Unplugged" concerts that I loved.

A few that come to mind as stand outs were Eric Clapton, Nirvana & Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Gosh, MTV had so much potential :x !
