Hi all... this is a part serious, part kidding around but I'm curious if others wrestle with this problem. My name is JamGuy and I'm an electric guitaroholic. I just purchased number 12. Yeah, she's a beauty and was a great deal on ebay but I just plain didn't need it. I can actually play the guitar so it's not like I'm just collecting them. Most of the guitars are more low-end models so again, I can somehow justify their purchase... and I'm actually paying for them, not creating a credit card crisis for myself.

Excuses, Excuses, I know...

At what point does something like GAS become an unhealthy obsession? I couldn't possibly purchase every beautiful or cool guitar I find at a bargain price on ebay, it's just crazy. It's honestly as bad as some addict making excuses to use. Maybe just the fact that I'm writing this is recognition that this has gone far enough. I now have a dozen super cool electrics (not to mention all of my other instruments... acoustics, a banjo, a uke, a bass, etc). and many of them live under a bed or in a closet... sure I pull them out and play them all but heck, I'm no shiva, I can only play one at a time, and time is becoming a precious commodity as of late.

Are there any chronic GAS recovery stories out there? I could use one about now. As part of my 10 step program, I think I should refrain from scouring ebay daily, that would be an awesome start... maybe I should take up smoking or drinking to excess so don't have money left for guitars. Any other suggestions?

We have a rule around here:
No pic? It never happened.

I am a living testament to the fact that GAS can be recovered from.
Several years ago I sold quite a lot of gear. Guitars and amps mostly.
Last year I continued with my recovery and sifted through my pedal collection. Too many that did the same things.
Last winter I bought a new amp but I did not do so without getting rid of an amp.
I have some good quality gear and that's enough for me.
The only GAS I will succumb to now is things I don't have any of.
Like maybe a 12 string acoustic or a Dobro.

Us functioning members with GAS love guys like BMW....Aside from the guitar GAS, and recent amp GAS, by biggest problem is pedal GAS! anything left BMW?

Check out the pedal board thread to see my extras. There's a couple there I wouldn't mind selling off.

(Not that you or I would ever participate in a for-sale ad here on the board where that sort of thing is frowned upon... )

I take it you're on a one step program?
One step into a music store and you're hooped?

Going to the music store tomorrow actually, going to look at some used saxophones in case the CL thing doesn't work out. At least then they should be in good working order, if not I can bring it back. Of course I'll jus "browse" a bit in the guitar section.

Personally, I think guys like BMW are part of my problem. They sell perfectly good guitars, which then make their way into places where I can eventually find them... and then feel the uncontrollable urge to own them. Shame on you, BMW!

Thank goodness I am just into guitars and amps. I sold all of my pedals a few years ago and I have not acquired any replacements since. I have, however, continued to acquire various new and used guitars (recently bought # 70) and amps (now up to 34). I am still gigging regularly and that income fuels most of my purchases - good rationalization!

Is it an illness? Yeah, probably so, but I am not yet ready to deal with it...

Gas is never a problem if your paying the bills and the wife is happy
when you start sacrificing those things due to gas... then you need to slow down
a good example.... say you buy a brand new guitar, but without telling the wife. then you have to shuffle money around to pay the electric bill and still not alert your wife that funds are missing.
that's when your gas has gotten out of control. :P

+1 Pay the bills, keep the family happy. I too use gig money to get new gear, or sometimes trade, rarely sell, but it happens. It works out well that way. My wife doesn't care what I do with my gig money, to us it's funny money.

Funny, you never hear anyone telling how their GAS was a hardship, as I'm sure it can be. Good advice given, hope readers will listen.

Now, let's get down to the heart of the matter. GAS is a serious condition that takes it's toll on us. The initial thrill of falling in love all over again, the sleepless nights preceeding delivery, and or, pick-up. Then there's the chance that we may have been too impulsive and realized all too late that there was another one that may have been more of what we wanted, then we buy that one too and have to explain to our wives that, "No, dear. actually there aren't two of them. It's the lighting in here, it's a reflection in the time, space continuim, what other bass, guitar, amp?"

O.K., I'm better now. Damn G.A.S.!

70 guitars and 34 amps. And I bet it's all nice stuff, too. You have a better inventory than both of the local music shops in my little town put together.

 I am really impressed by myself - how I can convince myself to really believe that I need some new gear  :(
So , JamGuy - there is no cure that I know about

Actually, it's been a little over 9 months since I acquired guitar # 60. I bought that guitar during the after Christmas 25% Off Sale at the local Music-Go-Round. That averages out to about one new guitar a month for 2012.

# 60. I love a nice slightly used guitar. 8)
