Well the only state in Iceland is ... well Iceland, and we had plenty of noteworthy bands through out late 20th century to date.

-Sugarcubes (the band that made Björk famous)
-Mezzoforte (a jazz-funk fushion whos single "Garden Party" made to the 17th place on the UK Single Chart in 1983)
-SigurRós
-Of Monsters and Men (one of my favourite band today)
-Múm
-Árstíðir (they are touring in Russia and eastern Europe right now, I used to work with one of the bandmember)
-Quarashi (they were big in Japan before breaking up, had a come back last year)
-HAM (Their biggest achievment was probably playing in CBGB's in late 80's or early 90's, had a comeback album last winter)
-Mínus

Noteworthy bands:
-Botnleðja (Tried to make it in UK under the name Silt in the 90's, had a comeback this summer)
-Vicky (originally name Vicky Pollard after a character in "Little Britain")
-Sykur (80's style electronic pop)
-Sólstafir (Hard rock)
-Skálmöld (Viking Metal)

Actually, I believe it was Manitobans who first coined the term. I first heard it more than 15 years ago from cousins in Manitoba and when I brought it back here nobody knew what I was talking about.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Ireland is about the size of Indiana, so I won't even bother differentiating between band from the south and here in the north.

Rory Gallagher,
Thin Lizzy,
Van Morrison,
Therpay?,
Ash,
Snow Patrol,
The Swell Season,
Glen Hansard,
The Frames,
Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem,
Gary Moore.

There was actually a documentary on the Beeb on Friday about Northern Irish music, so I haven't got much of an excuse for not knowing any.
