LISTEN TO THE WHOLE #$@*&!% SONG BEFORE YOU JUDGE.

I find some really great stuff on VH1 Classic, though. Rarely, but yes, it does happen.

The video is the worst part, or the funniest part, if you see it that way. But I'm into a bit of club/dance music. This isn't just out of the box, though. It's kind of like getting out of the box, then wrecking the box in question.

I love Eurasure, they were massive here at one point too, all the rage in the 80's.

You don't have to be so defensive right of the bat ol chap!

I am because I know how "well received" pop/dance music is around here. :P

Sadly, that's because some people are close minded idiots. If someone gives you $@!& for liking something, give them the proper salute! It's actually quite refreshing to see somebody actually listening to something outside the usual clichés. I've always felt that a good song is a good song. It doesn't matter how it's played, or what it's being played on.

Yaz, Erasure, Depeche Mode...all in the family tree. I like the production.

You should get on the Pet Shop Boys Buxom, more classic disco/pop music. Absolutely fantastic.

You don't have to be emberrashed Buxom, I myself tend to listen to The Ting Tings, La Roux and some 80's and 90's Hip-hop.

There is also Soft Cell. Their music is a little darker (with the exception of maybe Depeche Mode) than the others. They are actually one of my influences. I just recently, finally got the "Non-Stop Exotic Video Show" and "Live In Milan" DVDs. I like the keyboard lines that Dave Ball comes up with. I think one of my favourite riffs is the one for "A Mug's Game." That always gets stuck in my head.

Early Goth, Post-Punk, New Romantic, New Wave, Synth Pop or the first generation of "Alternative". What ever you call all those bands from that era of the late 70's and 80's, and some are very different. I love 'em. Lots of really great songs with killer progressions that adapt well to more traditional rock arrangements. Good stuff.

That's what influenced me as a musician. I think I was born in the wrong country. My musical tastes have always been more European, especially the UK. It's always been extremely difficult to find musicians who were into the same music. If I was in the UK, I could probably find people in ten seconds flat. Here, unless it's some Guns and Roses or SRV cover band, no dice. I really don't want to play metal or commercial blues music, so that's not going to work.

I think it's a curse of bassists from our generation. (Not sure, but I get the vibe we are likely around the same age somewhat) We were around and influenced by music that wasn't really ruled with an iron fist by lead guitarists. (not that I don't love Gn'R) Where even heavy guitar chugging punk was progression driven. As bassists, that gives you so much more room to work. Bands like The Cure, or Duran Duran, or any number of other acts from that "post-punk" and following era seemed to find a way to take a really catchy progression and work it into layers where the song itself was the star. Something that is sorely lacking in the riff laden world of what people generally refer to as "guitar-rock". Many guitarists would rather be playing with their distortion pedals cranked on something like "You Shook Me All Night Long" by AC/DC. Then playing intricate melodies up high with a chorus pedal giving the band room to work under them. Nature of the beast, I supposed. :?

I know what you are saying. I went to high school from the mid to late 80's (I'm 40, I was born in December of 1971) so the whole hair farmer and shred thing was all of the rage. I lived in a suburban area, so it was even more dominant with that as far as guitarists or bands were concerned. I really couldn't get into that. I couldn't see myself playing "Cherry Pie" or "Livin' On A Prayer" or playing eight to the bar while some dude pretended he was Steve Vai. I didn't feel I fit into that at all.

I wanted to do something different. I found it initially by watching MTV late one night and coming across 120 Minutes with Dave Kendall (you know the guy with the B.S. British accent-he's actually from Lodi, New Jersey) and seeing the Cure for the first time. It was the video for "Fascination Street" and hearing that massive bass sound did it for me. I didn't start playing bass until 1988, so even though I listened to Top 40 radio when I was younger and heard a lot stuff like Duran Duran or Human League, it really didn't register early on. I wasn't musically inclined at first, but I was artistic. I didn't even realise the different between a bass and a regular guitar until right before I even was talked into picking one up. It was one of those twists of fate that I even came into any of this. I couldn't even imagine what it would have been like now 24 years into it that if I didn't. I can't imagine not listening to this kind of music or playing it. Or even not playing an instrument in general. It's been my whole life. I never stopped playing no matter what happened to me.

There's something about the sound of that genre or genres of music that just appealed to me more than anything else. It does have a lot to do with what you were saying. There seem to be an emphasis on the songs and the freedom to experiment with them. I guess there was a certain DIY ethic there, as well.

Speaking of guitar pedals. In response to an ad we put out, a guitarist actually said that his pedal board wasn't set up for this genre. He should have actually paid attention to the ad in the first place than finding out later when we talked to him. I've noticed that's been a constant for years. People do not pay attention. All they see is "bassist looking" or "guitarist wanted." Ugh. That could probably be a forum topic, itself.
