I just routed out an Ibanez AR250 (double cutaway style LP) for a middle humbucker... so now it's an H/H/H configuration. It would have been easy enough to wire it up except I bought push/pull pots so that each individual pickup has a volume knob that coil splits the pickup and I was planning on a master volume. Basically the middle pickup would always be on and you could just dial out the volume for neck, neck/bridge, and bridge alone, w/o the middle pickup. I've found a hand full of wiring diagrams that address individual aspects of the "master plan" but nothing that really covers the whole gamut. Any suggestions (other than take it to a tech) [smile] would be helpful... in the mean time, I'm going to try and figure out what I can.

Calling AndyBigHair... help!!! Here's where I'm at.

Again, the master plan is to have 3 volume knobs for N,M,B with the middle pickup always on and just turned off by rolling off the volume knob. There'll be a master tone for all three pickups. Here's a few pictures... and I thought the hard part was going to be routing out the middle pickup slot

Good Grief..... Charlie Brown.....Did Lucy sell you that guitar... :?:

My current issues with wiring are simple compared to your project.......
There has to be a simpler way to attain what you want.....

Though on the other hand I have always loved those DBL Cutaways, I'm thinking of taking the plunge on a DBL Cutaway Hamer like Martin Barre used to play....

Other than drilling holes for toggle switches I couldn't think of another method to achieve what I was after. It's loosely based on Jerry Garcia's many guitars (Rosebud, Tiger, Lightning Bolt, and Top Hat) There are two Dimarzio Super 2's (neck and middle) and one Dimarzio Super Distortion (Bridge). Both models of pickup coil split nicely because of their high output giving very nice single coil tones. The wiring will basically allow me to run any or all of the pickups at a given time as single coils or as humbuckers. The middle pickup will always be on and can be dialed in using the volume knob. The neck and bridge pickup will operate via the 3-way like a standard two humbucker guitar...neck, neck/bridge, bridge. It's kind of like rolling a strat and a les paul into one critter... given that I can figure out what's going on.

I'm not even sure what I've drawn up so far is correct... not to mention how on earth I'm going to find room in the cavity to solder without touching other wires with the iron as more and more of them enter the fray. Needless to say... this isn't going to be an afternoon project.

I'm really happy with the routing of the body however... taking a dremel to the top of a beautiful guitar stressed me out quite a bit but surprisingly enough, with patience, it turned out perfectly. I'd never attempted such a thing before. Another possible problem will be whether there's room in the worm rout through the body should I have to snake another wire to the 3-way... it's very snug already as there are six wires (three 4-conductor pickup wires and three 2-conductor wires) stuffed through it now... time will tell.

Believe it or not I may be able to help out if it's not too crazy... I'm pretty handy with strat wiring, what are you up against?

Thank You for the offer...but I have it under control...Somewhat...The problem at the moment is that I'm simultaneously working on 4 separate builds see my threads below it would take too much to explain here....

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=51950

I didn't set out to work on so many at once but that is just the way it turned out......
Then again when you have ample time on your hands ( which ends Tuesday )
I really wanted to get them rebuilt, the longest part is awaiting the finish to cure...
Though today / yesterday I've been challenged by the Telepartster Neck pocket route dimensions....But have got it and it is starting to drizzle as I have my router set up outside..

It's time to go for a bike ride..... 8)

Well, it looks like those clever chaps over at Guitarelectronics.com may have beaten me to it.

Any good? If so, you can thank Mr C for giving me the heads up! If not you may want to give Martian a shout as it maybe a little while before I have some more free time for this.

Best of luck!

BTW...

Hey thanks guys and enjoy the new kitchen digs... The amazingly awesome tech staff at Dimarzio also sent me the following diagrams... on the Sunday of a holiday weekend no less. Very impressive customer service to say the least! Anyhow, all of this should help... now, back to the drawing board. Thanks again to Andy and all the rest of the good folks out there willing to chime in and lend a helping hand 8)

So.... based on the new diagrams from Dimarzio and Andy, I think I'm getting close. I might still be missing something regarding the 3-way, the master tone, and the middle volume. There's some discrepancies between the Dimarzio diagram and the Guitar Electronics diagram... one has a wire to the 3-way, the other doesn't :?: if anyone has any time to give it a lookin' over that would be great... if not, no worries. (I know you're busy Andy). BTW, I'd love to see some before and after pics of the kitchen. Maybe one of you wielding a sledgehammer

I think Andy meant he is getting all new cabinetry and getting ready to install the new countertops, base, overheads and what not.....

Speaking of that.... That is a plan for our kitchen within the next few months..I have despised the white cabinets since we bought the house 6 years ago.....Actually over the next two years I have a garage studio for the missus to build, the cabin by the pond out back to rebuild from the frame work up and eventually the house will get an addition upwards and outwards....

Howdy JamGuy!

I reckon you've cracked it mate! Your new diagram looks like it will work.

For a second opinion ping forum user Martian a quick PM and see what he thinks. That guy is a true Jedi when it comes to this sort of thing and will most certainly spot anything I've missed!

Pic's of Kung Fu style kitchen destruction to follow...

53magnatone, thanks for thinking of me buddy!

Cheers!

Andy
