I'm considering buying a guitar with jumbo frets. I tend to play with a heavy grip, so I have stayed away from them in the past. But, I'm thinking that they might force me to lighten up which would be good. Also, I'm tending to do a lot more two step bends and struggle making them clean with 10's. I'm thinking the jumbo frets will help there also.
So what do you think, should I swim upstream and hope I reach Nirvana, or should I stick to the familiar medium jumbo's?

I voted for the medium option - that's my own preference - even much into the vintage sized.
But you should go for the jumbos if you are seriously trying to loosen up a bit  Cheers

Before you buy anything, go try some guitars that have jumbo frets. After playing and comparing, make an educated decision as to whether or not it's worth the money. I personally hate jumbo frets, they just feel wrong to me.

I had a Tele w/jumbo frets for a couple of months. My friend wanted to sell it to me, I ended up not buying it. I didn't hate the jumbo's, they just felt kind of bumpy when I'd start to move around fast. But, since shredders seem to prefer the jumbo, I'm figuring that a person could adapt and learn to play fast on them. I'm border line, so I figured any advice might sway me. My inclination is to go for the jumbo's and broaden my horizons. But I would hate to have a guitar sit in the corner, unplayed. It just ain't right.

I own a couple of guitars with jumbo frets. I can always tell the difference when I jump from another guitar to them. They're okay, but the fact that I can always tell the difference is why I prefer the mediums, they feel more right to me.

I have played both. When I got my Highway 1 with the jumbo frets it forced me to develope a lighter touch. Now when I play my other guitars I feel like I have better control.

I have a LP with the fretless wonder style frets (Not a 50's model though--a later one--Norlin era)
And I have an Iceman with enormous frets--and everything in between--I'm fine switching around...

I have no guitars with jumbo frets. My favorites are medium jumbo, though, I have guitars with "vintage" frets which I like less and less as time goes on.

X-Jumbo is my favorite!

Jumbo is my second favorite!

Medium Jumbo...kind of whimpy after playing Jumbo and X-Jumbo.

It's easy to switch between each but X-Jumbo is the hand's down winner for tone and easy playin'!

After reading this thread, "Jumbo" doesn't even sound like a word anymore. I like medium though.

I think you can get used to pretty much anything. My strat has vintage frets and my tele has medium jumbos. I personally like the vintage better but I think it's mostly because I tend to play the strat more. If I go an extended period playing the tele, then the bigger frets begin to feel more comfortable.

Bigger frets do encourage a lighter touch, which is probably a good thing from an ergonomic standpoint. Try out a couple of guitars with the jumbo frets -- if they feel okay, then go for it!

I like vintage frets when I slide, but I like medium jumbos or jumbos when I bend.
