Hello Poorboy56,

I Don't have an acoustic guitar at this
point. I've owned both, if I had 3grand
to spend I'd go Martin, if I had 3hundred
then takimine. There you have it.

Cheers.

Nothing, and I mean nothing, is better in an acoustic guitar than Martin. Martin even makes some around $500 guitars that I'm certain beat any Takamine in sound quality. Any Martin is full ,round, and rich. Takamine tends to be shrill and thin. I have an early 80's sub-$500 Takamine (that looks like a Martin) and a $900 Martin (D16GT). There is no comparison.

And while I'm on a soapbox, I just cannot stand seeing great American artists like Bruce Sprinsteen and Garth Brooks slashing at their glued foreign wood from Takamine.

Based purely on sound, Martin.

That said, it depends on your budget. If you're not willing to spend at least $500, you aren't going to get a full-size Martin. But the $500 Martin guitars are incredibly nice... they aren't solid wood, but they have the iconic "Martin sound."

Play a Martin, and play any other acoustic guitar (of a similar build, of course), and you'll hear the difference.

Martin is like the Mercedes of acoustic guitars. There are a lot of other luxury models to choose from which have their own style, sound and attraction. The Takamine seems to be vey popular with some major artists. I understand that part of the appeal is the electronics. I have played some of the low end Takamines and they sound and play pretty well. Better than some of the low end Martins With that said, I own two Martins and have no reason to own any other acoustic. Best thing to do is play a number of different guitars and buy the one that sounds and plays the best to you. Also have someone else play so you can hear how it sounds too.

I don't like the new Martin composite back guitars. D28's, D45's are sweet.
