i think the only important follow up question is "what kind of guitar do you have?"

I've got a little hunch - that several of the posters here have got more than one.... :)

well, i know that, but i mean.... like at work and stuff, when you meet someone new and find out they play guitar, my first question is always "what do you have?"
then i can make my own internal judgements on what kind of gear the person has, or what they say might be a huge clue to what they really know....
like if a guy you meet says "oh, yeah - i play guitar.." and then you ask what kind of guitar/ guitars he has- and he comes off with something like "i've got one of those wooden ones." you know he has no idea what he's talking about..... it's really sad how many times i've actually heard that one.
on the other hand, if the guy rattles off a list of a bunch of awesome guitars that i can only dream of playing, i'll have immediate guitar envy and secretly hate them a little bit...lol

Wow! Some great comments here!
Funny thing to me is, how many folks seem to kind of, "not like", getting asked about their musical talent. Personally I quite like it when someone wants to talk to me about my musical endeavors. I am usually pleased to share any info I have in return for learning the same about the other person. There is always the chance it will turn into a new Musical friend, or a place in a band, or a job or whatever! Plus, I am gratefull for the talent that I have, (such as it is), because soooo many people just don't have it!

And besides all that, the question that I always get asked first anyway is, as another poster mentioned I think, "What KIND of music do you play?" To which I reply, "Kind of a folk/blues/rock kinda thing. Picking and strumming from my roots in folk and some fun lead on my 5 year old Strat, (that I always, always wanted ever since I was a kid!)

Peace,
Gridlok

I have no problem talking about music, and guitar. I just don't like the question "acoustic or electric". In my opinion it's kind of a dumb question; if you play one, you can certainly play the other. Sure there are different styles of playing both, but the fundamental technique remains the same. If you know how to play chords, scales ... then you can play either kind of guitar. This is just my opinion though, feel free to disagree.
