When you tell someone that you play guitar, how many times have you been asked "do you play acoustic or electric?" Don't I just play guitar? Do they ask piano players if they play a grand piano or a keyboard? I suppose those who only own one or the other have a straight answer, but aren't guitar players just guitar players?

I usually just reply yes. I get a puzzled look, then they figure out I play both.

the answer should probably be...

No...!!! For play I have various spherical objects that I can kick, punt, strike...
I do however also create music...

That should pretty much halt any further questions.... :?

My six year old grandson asked me one of my favorite questions..he pointed at my acoustic and my strat and wanted to know what kind you used for air guitar..hmmmm
When people ask what kind you play maybe its not really an insult its because they really are interested but really dont know much about them and thats sort of the only question they can think of..

I hate it when everyone tells me how great I am when they hear me play. I'm like, "Don't waste my ear space with things I already know." and, "If you are going to say it, at least say it in perfect pitch so I don't have to listen to your out of tune voice." Yea, that usually gets them to shut up. I mean who do they think they are making noise instead of keeping the canvas of silence pristine for my next beautiful sound.

Seriously though, I think it's more of a style question.

Yes, yoda. A guitar player is just that.

I usually get, "Are you any good?". At this point, I can't just provide a simple answer, which is what they want. I break into a whole philosophical explanation, subjective idea of what makes a guitar player "good", and it's usually the complete opposite of what the vast majority of people think makes a good guitarist.

^^^ Simply because the vast majority of people are completely ignorant of what music, striving to be a creative musician and instruments are about....
To them it's just sounds that appeal to them, but the majority of these sounds is a commercially based set of sound parameters.
I cannot distinguish the top 20 bands on the popular playlists, (any playlist regardless of the genre ) they all play the same formula, the vocalists all sound alike and the rhythm patterns are the exact same time signature. 99% of it is what used to be called Muzak....
But if you can package em in a sexy ensemble and portray them as these fictional drama queens then " Watch the Greenbacks tumble " ( Hmmm...where is 10CC :?: )

I'm not going nostalgic here, as in music was so much better when I was a kid, Nope...we had tons of audio crap on the airwaves, a commercally viable product is just that.
Somewhere along the way, the real definition of artist/musician has been shelved, locked and conveniently the key is thrown out....Lest they wake up.....Unlikely of course....Lemmings are quite content to just follow along......

I just don't tell people  if they happen to bring up that they play, then I will chime in. but I don't offer up information like that freely. its just like how I liver tell people that I used to be a plumber... they always want something afterwards........

I have never been asked acoustic vs. electric, per se. I have been asked which kind of music I favored playing. When asked if I was any good, I would and still say, "I've done my homework but for the length of time I've been playing, I should be a lot better." Here's even more food for thought based on my interpretation of the question: Are you a guitar player or a musician? I call myself merely a guitar player. The way I figure it, a musician strives to constantly learn everything about the art. Me? Eh. I'm in my little late 60s - early 70s playing world and only have one guitar. I'm happy right where I am attempting to conquer this sub-genre. Sure, I'll learn isolated stuff which interests me but in terms of the "Big Picture", again, eh. I have nothing to prove and choose not to compete with myself for it takes a good deal of the enjoyment out of simply playing guitar.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

My answer would be:
A guitar player plays for fun and enjoyment.
A musician earns a living playing his/her instrument.

The question I asked does not piss me off or anything. I just seem to get it alot when someone finds out I play. Most times it is asked by someone who doesn't.

Not to confuse the issue but one who earns a living playing his/her instrument is a "professional". I, myself used to be a "professional" guitar player for many years. Even then (although others did), I didn't call myself a musician for the aforesaid reason.

Again and as always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

The general definition of musician is "a person that makes music by playing a musical instrument".

I've been asked the acoustic or electric question. I think that's a common folk way of asking if you strum open chords or do the tweedely weedely weeeee.

i think the only important follow up question is "what kind of guitar do you have?"
that's what i ask... meaning, strat, lp, what?
