Hi,

I'm new here & I need a way to get the sheet music for various songs as played on you tube or other sources where no sheet music is available or the title/artist may be unknown but I want to learn the song. Are there people equipped for this or is it by definition a hand-job. Either way, does anyone know people who do it for a modest amount of money? Here's a couple of examples

or just the audio of this one

Thanks

I must be thinking about a different kind of hand job... :?

Sorry, I had to say it. On a serious note though, I personally cannot be of much help with this. However, when I want to learn a song, I try to figure it out simply by ear. I listen to the guitar very attentively and do my best to re-create what I hear. If it is a song that has really got me stumped then I bring it up at my next guitar lesson, and my teacher helps me understand.
If you can't figure it out by ear, then I suggest finding a good teacher to help you. Taking some lessons never hurts anyways. I've been playing for several years and still feel I have things to learn and improve on.
Best of luck, and welcome to the forum!

He said hand job
I wonder if you can go to a nearby college that has a music program, maybe some hungry student for hire?

I knew that was on the way

I've done a couple myself, songs that is. Health is fading as is the ability to learn just by looking but I still want to soak up about 30-50 songs real good and real fast. I've asked two or three people already including a music guru in the family. Also tried the closest place where I could take lessons in person (1 hour away) but there was no interest there either. Even booted winduhs just to try that useless Ear something automation, once. I'm doing one right now, a little known very nice tune but it'll take me months to have a decent track ready.

"Sheet music by ear" is called "transcription". Googling "music transcription service" turned up 2 million places that will do it for you. The couple I looked at don't give details about pricing (varies depending on how complex the music is) and they aren't explicit about whether they'll do copyrighted material or if they'll only transcribe your original music.

Just to be clear, you are looking for standard musical notation (musical pitches/rhythms marked on staff lines) and not guitar tablature (diagrams that show you where to put your fingers)? If you're looking for guitar tabs there are millions of songs already tabbed on-line.

The only way i know is playing the song over and over preferably with one of those devices to slow it down and repeat bits until you learn them.

As far as i'm aware there's no other way round it.

Why not delve in and do it yourself? it'll boost all the areas of being a musician for you.

Remember what Steve Vai said about transcribing: 'It's a miracle drug and will improve your ear, reading, soloing and psychiatrist!'

* quote from Steve's intro to The Frank Zappa Guitar Book

I don't read sheet music, I play by ear.
You should see the calluses I get.

thank you one and all., I have a lot to catch up with. I can and have done it myself but have little time.

No, definitely not tablatures

I have already found some of those services and used a couple too. Not bad.

You would think this would be an opportunity for a computer programmer.

It's be simple enough to decifer a digital sample to obtain notes, tempo, etc. and then, using the program, transcribe them to sheet music. A musical version of BabbleFish.

Music follows rules much in the same way as Math and look what computers can do with Math. I suspect accuracy would be in the high 90% range.

BTW, this is MY intellectual Property. If one of you computer geniuses out there gets a spark from this post, I want my cut !!

cheers!

This is a tool aimed to HELP transcribe music, but I don't know how good it is. The write up does explain some of the difficulties in using a computer program to do the transcription for you, but I, too, think it ought to be do-able.

Get the Synthesia app. http://www.synthesiagame.com/getTheGame.aspx

It plays your midi files and it has a notation staff scrolling on the top of the screen. Here's a quick video I took.

Thanks for the software suggestions, the automated transcriptionware to date that I know of is totally useless, seems to be more difficult to program than one would think.

I use "rosegarden" in Linux which I believe also has a windus version. It's a good midi composer with loads of options and also does sheet music & scrolling like you say (freeware).
