so i just bought this new vintage modified jazzmaster ( made a ngd post you might've seen) and after a couple of days of playing with it i think i've decided to take it back.... i think i liked the looks more than the sound. or at least it sounded better in store through a 3,000 dollar fender amp. my peavey pacer (1978!) just does not mix well with it. i play mostly surfish/ garage rock/ grungey kinda stuff.... a little reverb, a touch of distortion from my ds-1, and i'm happy. i know this thing is a beautiful instrument, and in the right hands someone will be very happy with it... it just doesn't have the sound i'm looking for, and rather than spend more money to have something closer to what i want, i think i'd rather go back, get a cheaper strat or something, and maybe spend the leftover cash on a JB humbucker or something....
i've just got this bad gut feeling that if i keep it, i won't really be happy and it'll end up getting sold for less than i have in it. sam ash has a 30 day money back/exchange policy.... my only worry about that is i've already peeled the protective film off...... does that negate my return? anyone know? sorry such a long rambling post, just kinda freaking out....
thoughts?
:(

I think I'm with you -- if it's not "doing" it for you - then get the return done before that time runs down.

about the plastic film,, wouldn't think that would nix a return. Just be sure all the original packaging material is included, and don't even say one word about the protective film, let THEM ask about it.

Outside change they may slap you with a restocking fee but I don't know if they'd even take it that far. They have hundreds of instruments come in and out the door in a month, I don't think they'll sweat plastic film being removed.

Good luck, let us know how the story ends.

+1

Cut your losses while you still can.

Or buy a better amp.

Arjay, I'd love to get a better amp, but can't afford one now... My dream amp would be an old twin reverb.
I took it back and talked to my salesman , he was very cool and understanding... i told him that i hated to have to bring it back, but it just didn't have the sound i was looking for... he asked me some questions and got an idea of what i was looking for, and helped me look for something else in the same price range. picked up a squier surf strat , in surf green, with the lipstick pickups. this thing's freakin sweet. what i should've gone with to begin with. i've never been a big fan of pearloid pickguards, but on this it looks awesome. and it still has the vintage tuners i love so much.
i've got a much better feeling about this one :)

Arjay nailed it.
Get a better amp.

I would trade two $1500 guitars or three $1000 guitars or five $600 guitars for one great ($3000) amp any day of the week.

Just to clarify, i do love my peavey pacer. i know a lot of people might think it's absolute junk, but my first amp was the exact same thing, and then after years of other things (given, nothing too fancy) i found another pacer at a pawn shop for 75 bucks. i had to have it. the reverb tank on this thing is awesome. it does have a good sound.... it's just not the amp i'd buy if i had 3000 dollars :)

Nice exchange. I hear ya. I bought an Epi LP Standard Pro and it never grew on me. I kept it past the exchange period and took a shower on it when I traded. Upside is I got new CV 60's Strat. That one doesn't have to grow on me, it's already there. Pics later in the Squier section. :o

Listen to your gut. Take it back pronto. Pay whatever minor fee etc. The store may be happier with an exchange than a return, that way they stiil get their profit and a sale. Have something in mind that you would like, something that makes you happy.

included the amp in the picture just for the sake of this thread :) cheers, everyone. i'm very happy with this strat, i'd venture to say it's the best sounding strat i've ever played surf tunes with, pun definitely intended :)
