This morning I went to Reid Music to buy either a good guitar or amp for my cousin's incredibly gifted grandson.I couldn't decide whether to get him the lovely Butterscotch Infinity lefty Tele that they had or the great Vox VT-20 Valvetronix amp that they had there too .I himmed and hammed for several minutes looking from one to the other so I ended up buying both of them for the little guy.The Vox has 33 amp models as well as 22 on-board effects and 99 presets with room for him to add his own favourite settings.Another thing that really adds to its ability to make great sounds is that it has a 12AX7 tube in the power amp section as opposed to the pre-amp in most other hybrid amps,so it has an even more realistic tube-like tone.So with a great guitar and that sweet Vox amp he should be set for a few years as the Vox would probably do for small venues since it's 20 W.When I started gigging I only had a 5W Paul amp until I saved up enough to get a 20W no-name piggy back amp with reverb and tremolo that looked like it may have been made by Silvertone. This little guy should have both of them singing sweetly in no time.Anyway there is precious little left in the Rick fund but I'm sure that it's money well spent as this kind of God-given talent should be nourished and encouraged in every way possible.

Guits,

Your a great guy with a good heart. I hope you are repaid seven-fold for you kindness generosity.

Vox makes great little amps. I have a DA 10 that is my love.

That was very nice of you, Guiltslinger. I am also a big proponent of banking karma.

I agree with the amp having the tube in the power section. (12AX7 though?) Having said that, there's something great about pushing the front end of a Vox.

UPDATE:

This afternoon my cousin Nancy and I went to my cousin Jesse's grandson's house and brought him his new Butterscotch Tele and Vox VT-20 and he was speechless.Aside from briefly meeting me at the family reunion, he doesn't know me,but I know God--given talent when I see it and that's what matters. He opened the box with the amp and was blown away because it has so many bells and whistles that make it much more versatile than the tiny no-name amp that he was using. He seemed a bit daunted by it because the owners manual/instruction book looks more like a novel but he's a pretty bright kid and he'll figure it out-especially if he gets the optional foot-controller.Anyway I think that he figured that the guitar in the gig bag was one I had brought to demonstrate the amp with but when I told him that it was his too he told his mom that"It's just like Christmas."He just kept saying thankyou over and over so I know that I did the right thing.Anyway his mom told me that every day after school he makes a beeline for his room and plays his guitar until bedtime, not only going over what he learned at his lesson but improvising on it.I know full well that he'll keep slugging away at the guitar as I can see the same fire and eagerness to play that I had at his age and that he'll never loose it.

BTW: His mother told me that his guitar teacher charges a good bit more for his lessons than he does for his brother because he's a southpaw-that's a new one on me and I can't for the life of me see any rationelle for it,other than to chisel some extra money from her. I wish that I lived closer to him than a 1 1/2 hour drive away as I wouldn't charge one cent for a kid with such an inate talent.Talent such as his needs to be nurtured and encouraged as much as possible because people so gifted aren't born every day.

That is the biggest load of......more because of being a lefty..That angers me to smithereens...seriously epic failure of a teacher! That almost seems borderline illegal..

I just sent a text to my instructor..I will not repeat his opinion..however he said its not rocket science you just have student sit across from you and it resembles a mirror image thats effective for learning..Tommi Lomme, Kurt Cobain and Paul McCartney all lefties also..Did I say I was really irritated! lol
