For those of you who see a bleak future as a rock star, a related phenomenon may offer you the prospect of a lucrative career. At the current meeting of the profession in the United States, the big news is 'making hearing aids sexy'. They are catering to the 'boomer' generation and beyond whom they acknowledge are demonstrating hearing losses consistent with the chronic exposure to the intense damaging sounds of rock music either live, or recorded, as well as the new passion for 'mobile music' and the inappropriate volume settings of same either through headsets or the testosterone boosting popularity of automobiles as boom boxes.

Both as a musician of more than 50 years, and a health care professional as well, I have observed the rising tide of potential hearing loss as an every day issue on the street and we are finally seeing that what goes around comes around in this issue.

There is within the music industry an organization dedicated to disseminating information regarding the potential damage to hearing, and enough of our "idols" as proof positive of the effect.

Take heed.

Thanks for the info doc. My wife thinks my hearing is going especially when she asks me to do something around the house. On a serious note, I have been thinking about that lately. 8)

No, no! This has nothing to do with your music. I'm going to offer you the benefit of a professional consultation at no fee in this matter.

What you are suffering from, as are most of us married men, is an affliction known as 'wife deafness',in musicians commonly referred to as "Roll Over Beethoven Syndrome." It is insidious, affects the host silently, without symptoms at first,. It's clinical manifestations are in the form of responses from the afflicted such as 'Huh?', 'Wha?', 'Hmmm?' or none at all.

The managment of this, to avoid spousal conflicts, is a conditioning program in which the wife deaf learn to automatically respond to any vocal cues from the spouse with the response: "Yes, dear!", regardless of what transpires there after.

I hope this has been of some service to you.

Good luck.

Doc

Hearing loss is serious. My ears have been ringing since 1980 (from standing under F-111's for 3 years) and it's louder all the time. I have lost all my high frequency hearing so have to crank all the treble settings way up to hear 'em, one ear hears better than the other...

Good topic zzdoc, everyone should be aware that ears are fragile and need to be protected.

I have ringing 24 hours a day.

Wish I had gotten this advice younger... after HOURS of loud concerts, and thousands of miles on a Harley with open pipes... my hearing is not what it was or what it should be. Take heed, youngsters... protect those ears while you've still got 'em! 8)

I don't want to put dopey earplugs in my ears.If they made ear plugs that weren't dopey I would use them. The key at a concert is to stand in the middle and away from the speakers. If you do that you'll be fine.

Don't worry your young, if you keep jamming you'll be on stage instead of being one of the crowd.

I visited the dr this week. They did the whole test to check my hearing. The audiologist's exact words:

"Well, if you were 90, I wouldn't be that concerned about your hearing."

I'm 46.

:(

Listen to the Doc. I had my left ear drum replaced once and my right ear done twice soon to be 3. My hearing is really really bad. Don't worry about looking goffy with ear plugs . You have no ideal what it's like not being able to hear.
