Texas Flood is a perfect choice to start with (his first album, released in 1983). I got into SRV around the time 'In Step' came out, 1989-1990ish. I highly recommend that album too.

I looked online and saw that Texas Flood was the first album and it came out on the year I was born so I went for that one. I'll definitely check out "in step" so thanks for the recommendation.

Cheers

Tom

Exactly....

Anyone who says Stevie is repetitive and boring just needs to listen to this or Lenny and eat a boat load of hat thereafter.....

It took me a long time to realize that it´s all about TONE.
So many excellent guitar players, so few with a fine tone!
Thank you Leo! Thank you Stevie!

Personally, I think he is a good player, but I have never understood what all the fuss was about. But hey, I am glad you found something to inspire you, and thats what matters!

Sort of agree about In Step. Brilliant album.

Probably the best studio album he did, and unfortunately, it was the last one he'd see released before the helo accident. But you could really hear he was getting it together as a performer in that album. His vocals had really settled down, and since he'd gotten himself off the substance abuse, I thought he really was putting it all together.

I still recall hearing the news that day, It was sort like hearing about John Lennon all over again.

regarding the comment "Don't see what all the fuss is about"
That's part of the beauty of music lad, that he just doesn't "do it" for you is just part of the mystique of music. For example, hearing anything from the Stones just make me want to throw up in my mouth.

Now you need to discover Freddie King. You’ll get a better understanding of what Stevie is doing/playing through one of his biggest inspirations, The Texas Cannonball!

all I can contribute is I saw Stevie play outdoors in New Paltz, Ny during the day with my buddy Dean. We watched him from right in front the whole show and he was awesome. When he layed Lenny down and played him by his chord I was jawdropped. That same night we saw him at the Chance in Poughkeepsie from right up front. He looked down at us while playing and had a big 'ol grin on his face. I'll never forget him and that day.

ok, here's my SRV anecdote ... I met him after a gig at Manchester Apollo on his first (only?) UK tour. The gig was incredible despite a malfunctioning P.A., he was throwing his guitar round the stage, bouncing it off the floor, he played the roof off the place. He was a genuinely nice guy, signed autographs for every fan who was waiting, chatted briefly about how he'd got clean from drugs and booze and had a handshake that nearly broke every bone in my wrist. His manager was telling him they had to leave to make the airport on time but he didn't seem to care, he just seemed to enjoy being with the fans. The man was dynamite.

Having been too young to have ever seen him live, I only got into his music about four years ago myself. My Dad was trying to get me to listen to him earlier than that, but when I was 13 or 14 I thought of "Eruption" as the pinnacle of all guitar music ever. It wasn't until my teacher got me to play Texas Flood when I was 16 that I gained appreciation for the difficulty, and depth, of Stevie's music in particular and blues music in general. It really changed the direction I was going in my life... Hey, maybe if I had been studying my homework instead of learning Texas Flood note for note, I'd be in college right now! Seriously though, I would've missed out on a lot of great music and great opportunities if I had never heard Stevie.

I agree, but if you're going to listen to his influences, you gotta get some:

Albert King
Hubert Sumlin (especially w/Howlin' Wolf)
Lonnie Mack
Kenny Burrell (for his "Chitlins Con Carne", "Lenny", "Stang's Swang" jazz excursions)
and if course, Jimi Hendrix...
