You've pretty much seconded my observations regarding this project. I've got a '57 Hotrod as my nod to the vibe having owned a '58 way back whose B&W photos still have me convinced that it was the last of the SB2/SB3 transition but the memory fades. At least, I don't recall it have a broad smear of red in its burst.

I expect that ya'll sat around a big table and pitched your case for what year[s]the project should go with. However, I have never been in love with that 10/56 neck, What ever it was in a neck that Clapton recovered from that clutch of ragtag Strats he purchased from Sho Bud that became part of his Blackie would have been my vote to be put on '57 American Vintage Series guitar.

I'm aware of the hot rod series and their 9.5/med-jumbo option. I had one for awhile, but the neck was a bit too chunky for me and the guitar was a bit heavy. I have a great '65 custom shop that I like, but it's a 7.25 radius. I did rip out the vintage frets and install some med-jumbos on there, which suits my playing a bit better.

I'm really excited to play the new '65, and the youtube clips I've heard were really great. The pickups sound excellent from what I can tell. Most likely I'll get hold of one and after playing for a week or so, decide if it's worth customizing further.

It does look like Fender really got close with these so hats off!

But for future Fender development......consider a '64 or '65 transition era logo, medium C neck model in 9.5 radius and watch the sales pile up!

Well, different strokes for different folks, and there's no accounting for tastes, I'm sure. In my hands the '57VHR is a fine player with a modified soft-V..a tad shallower that the classic V coming closer to the thin shouldered vintage C neck like the one on my Gilmour which is a copy of his '83 '57RI neck.
In my hand the best neck carve Fender does is on the Clapton guitars and I'd rather that in a 21 fret solid maple rather than than 22 fret board they do.

By the way, this is a shot of one of the new '65 Strat round lam boards. Maybe this is one of them on the thicker side of the spectrum? I'm just assuming that maybe the new boards vary in thickness from Strat to Strat.

Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to playing one of these when I can! Maybe the '59 more so.

Here is a picture of my '65 CS laminate. A little bit thinner than the one pictured above.

Nice.

Yes, very slightly different, but as mentioned, the rosewood may shrink with age.

Though, did the rosewood get bigger or smaller with the different years? Or even within years or the same models because of human difference? I've seen some lam boards that seem REALLY thin compared to these.

Yes, that 65 CS looks like the real deal. Why couldn't they get it right on the new AV???

Is there a way to find out where in my state (Florida) Fender may have shipped a new '65 AVRI? I'm in the Tampa area and hit the big chain dealers yesterday....Sam Ash, GC. None of the salespeople knew anything about the new AV series, and a rep at GC checked their computer systems and told me that they don't have any plans to bring in ANY of the new models.

I'm sure Fender knows where they've shipped product, so if I could track down one or more of these somewhere in my entire state, I'd be interested in driving to audition one.

Hi Kyle,
Ahhh Kyle, you have more faith in computers than i do, my friend.

Anyway, if you checked your local GC's & Sam Ash's with no luck, I see a couple of folks down south you may give a try to that have a good chance of having some in-- A1A Guitars & Infinity Electronics. I appreciate that you're willing to take a drive.

Hope that helps a bit,
all the best,
rob

Hey Kyle,
If all else fails check out musician's friend I know it may be a hassle but they have always had a great return policy. My money says your first one you get you will love I have a 59 and it was the first one I played. Also the guitar center where I live did not have any either.
Anyway just a thought.
Cheers 8)

Thanks for the heads up on these two Rob, especially A1A guitars. Though theres' a new GC in Coconut Creek, I may now not feel so bad about having left LI and my access to The Music Zoo. Would be nice if A1A could qualify as a Showcase Dealer. Then we might get ME and company down here for a long awaited face to face with the South Florida Forum Mates.
Kyle...there's another member in the Tampa area whom you might be aware of. His screen name is Arnold Layne. You can do a Forum Search for posts from him.
Doc
