Were they leather, tolex, or leather-painted cardboard (which was in in the 50s)?

Hmmmm. I don't recall my the old '58 tweed Strat case being painted cardboard.

Anyone know what case comes with the 65 AV Strat?

I answered my own question when I found a small dealer (Harbor Music in Redondo Beach) who had a 65 AV Strat. It was sunburst and looked just like my 65 did when it was new - it was even hanging above the counter like when I picked out mine.

Scott was nice enough to dig out the case, it was just like my vintage Jag case (and as a couple of you described), black Tolex with orange low plush interior. Unfortunately he didn't have a second case, though he thought he might be able to get one the next time he went to G&G. However once he pulled out a black G&G vintage style with plush black interior and my guitar slipped snugly inside, I forgot about my desire for a period correct case. The Lake Placid Blue looked great against the black, I bought it (good price too).

I do have to agree with those who feel the quality has dropped, the leatherish ends look pretty weak, and the molded handle just doesn't feel right. I think if I put this case through what my old ones been through it would be in pieces, but I don't get out much anymore so I'm pretty sure I'll be happy with this. The AV case was a bit nicer.

He also had a blond/maple 56 AV Strat ... hmmm.

Took some pics of my old "Ultimate Relic" case.

I also wanted to mention after seeing the 65 AV Strat, that the picture on the Fender site is wrong; it shows the screw above the middle pickup too far forward, like it is (correctly) on the 62. The actual 65 AV has it further back where it should be, more or less above the pickup.

The first link from the Fender site must be a pre production or something, the second of the one I saw is correct (I wish they would sell these 65 correct pickguards).
