There's an HSS in the Hot-Rodded American Vintage line... '57 Strat with a DiMarzio ToneZone humbucker in the bridge.

Several of us, including myself, own that guitar. I was going to cite this for the OP but methinks he was thinking more along the lines of a 'conventional' HB design.

Thanks Chromeface! yep, was answering based on the more traditional Humbucker. Thanks for clarifying!
Best regards,

No big deal. The idea behind the 'hotrods' had its genesis with the fact that players often 'hotrod' their stock guitars with aftermarket 'upgrades'. In this case they took a '57AVRI, softened the v-neck contour a bit, and upgraded the pickups to SCN's and a Hotrails which has a SC configuration for convenience, I am sure. They could have just as easily used the Duncan HB found in some of the other HSS guitars, but that would have required changing the guard. This way, they keep the vintage vibe but swapped in a hammer. The '62 IMHO, does not enjoy the same level of mod, but the Tele sure does.

Sonny Landreth has a similar configuration on many of his strats, except the bridge pickup is a Fast Track 1.

Image

One of his strats is fitted with three DiMarzio rail humbuckers: Fast Track 1 (bridge), Fast Track 2 (middle), Chopper (neck).

Hi, could anyone tell me the main difference between a vintage '59 and a 2013 American Special?

I tried a vintage strat in a store and the setup and feel were amazing. I think it was this one and looked light green to me. Image

But I really like the new surf green color of the 2013 American Special as per below:

Are the the 2013 American Special series made in Mexico?

Go to the top of this thread and read Brad's post on this new series. It replaces an MIA series which was called the American Vintage Reissue. Brads comments speak for themselves. The American Specials are MIM. They are two very different instruments.

Thanks ZZDoc. Yeah, I suspected the Special might be MIM just by looking at the price point difference compared to the AVR. I read the top post and its very informative but I was just curious if any Fender aficianados might have some more in depth info such as what is the difference in materials used (woods e.t.c.), are pickups in specials wound also MIM, is there a significant difference in quality in finish, e.t.c... Just wondering ...

What am I missing here? (Please don't make me read all 13 pages again). Why would "American Specials" be MIM? Fill me in.

All the best,
rob

I read it, and read it again. I think I'm missing it too.

Dont know if this has been asked earlier on the thread, gave up on page6. Can anyone tell me if the 62 hot rod strats are still in production.
Obviously the 62 AVRI has been dropped for the new line up. But what about the hot rods?
Or is there a new hot rod line coming?
Cheers.

Hi dc01, still on the website http://www.fender.com/guitars/stratocaster/?&series=Vintage%20Hot%20Rod&brand=Fender
Still in our reference files as being open and seeing that some shipped in December.
All indicators are that it they are still with us.
Hope that helps,
all the best,
rob

@ZZDoc

The American Specials are MIAs, not MIMs.

The Telebration version had a full-sized humbucker and a fully intonatable bridge, features the standard production Hot-Rodded American Vintage '52s do not have.

Thanks all. I guess I will be waiting for the 2013 American Specials to show up. Does anyone know if they are shipping yet?
