Soooooooo.......I figure if Doc is gonna have the last word on a thread.....as a public service I should at least make him work for it a little bit.........
In my travels around the various forums---obviously inclusive of this thread---- I've seen some grumbling about pricing and such. That's actually a subject I don't get too involved in with my current gig, but it did make me curious.
The oldest pricelist i can get a hold of is 1968 (wish i could find older ones!!) and it looks like this:

Image

Then I checked out some prices online, found this other website------- http://146.142.4.24/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl (feel free to play on your own)
and even though i probably did it backwards (as i am wont to do sometimes) for a 65 Strat, I came up with this:

Image

Not bad in my estimation, considering that Fender spent over a year pretty much forensically measuring and reverse engineering a load of original Pre-CBS models to make the new ones as close to the originals as possible. I don't know that we could build them for less and have them still be "right". All in all, not a bad deal I'd say---all disclaimers in effect ( I work here---I'm a broke down musician----If i was rich they would call me "eccentric" etc. etc.)

did ya try one yet Doc, or what? Kyle, hope you check in too when ya find one to try.
Ok ...i gotta get back to it.....
cheers,
rob

We did something of that sort on one of the threads some years back and found equivalent pricing between the current American Standard and the vintage equivalent. I haven't had a chance at the guitars as yet but it's on my bucket list.

I blame the Federal Reserve. I've never bought a Fender Precision where I thought. "I paid too much for this bass." I've always been more then satisfied with the amount of bass I got for my money. That's why I won't play anything but Fender Precisions. (well, that and killer tone) If I could say that about everything I buy I'd be a lot less upset about our economy.

They have not rounded the join between rosewood and maple on the headstock - don´t understand why not because it´s easy to do and much more elegant and is how the pre cbs slab boards looked. have they got the volume and tone knobs right with the correct size fonts ?

Hi dominickk,
If you get a chance and can post a pic or two on what you're mentioning on the join, that would be cool. I just want to be sure that I'm understanding correctly. I believe that all the knobs are correct except as noted on the Jazzmasters on an earlier post. We are researching a correction on that. All others should be good to go.

Thanks!!
All the best,
rob

Does anyone know if the American Vintage Series qualifies for the $100 "Instant Holiday Savings" just announced on the Fender site (and eMail)? All I can find is "qualifying Squire and Fender gear". Very close to deciding on a '52 or '57 Vintage Tele and that would certainly hasten my decision. Thanks.

Regarding the 1965 prices, I purchased my '65 Strat in 1965 for $273, I think that was list price for sunburst - $305 for a custom color. So the current prices are maybe a little high but not too bad - using your CPI calculator the Vintage 65 would be $2,240 - as opposed to the actual list of $2500.

Your findings are consistent with what's been done here before. We find that the prices, adjusted for inflation and incomes are just about in the same ball park.

Knobs are a major annoyance for me. I have 4 custom shops with wrong knobs - meaning not vintage correct. It is my understanding that fender is choosing to not sell these knobs separately. I know I am rather ocd about this, but fender should allow anyone with a coa to correct this. Yes, I will pay for them a reasonable amount.

Hi sikoniko,
Aside from mentioning that you have 4 Custom Shop guitars with non-vintage correct knobs, I'm not real clear what the deal is. Are these older guitars that you have had for a while, or newer ones or.....? And what knobs are they and what is not correct about them? I'm not sure that I'm seeing the full picture.

Hi Doc, On the new American Series, see my post on this a couple of posts ago...... I'm not seeing any specifics other than what I've already addressed (The Jazzmaster knobs).
Sikoniko's post is about Custom Shop instruments with no real info on when they were made- what they are- or specifically wrong on them. Custom Shop and production are two different animals. Give me some examples and I'll give it my best shot at answering the concern.
Now then.......pass the dressing please....and save some pumpkin pie for me please.

Best regards,
rob

Hi Rob,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. My guitars range from 1-3 years old. I have a '57, '60, '62, and '69 - all custom shops. 2 of them custom orders and 2 of them off the shelf. My frustration lies in inattention to detail used in these models in recreating the originals (something I think the custom shop should have a better handle on). My desire would be to correct them with more accurate parts.

It would seem that of all of the aftermarket parts available, no one accurately nails what the vintage guitars knobs really looked like. If these guitars truly do so, I want replace mine with a more accurate knob.

I called my local Fender dealer and they said Fender is not selling these as accessories - they are limited to purchase of this guitar. My ask is that you make an exception for customers of Fender Custom Shop that have a valid COA and would like to replace the historically incorrect parts with a more accurate part (assuming these knobs are). There is a premium for a FCS and exclusively offering this would be a great benefit.

Thanks

Hi again sikoniko,
Thanks for explaining in more depth. I'm still not certain exactly what detail or details aren't right, but rather than back and forth on this thread, maybe PM me with Serial numbers and a detailed description of what you're looking for, or what is not right in your estimation, and if there's something I can take care of, I certainly will.
On the COA subject, although certainly a good thing to have and definately part of the package, to be honest with you, in my little world, the reciept is the important part of the equation because it shows me the original purchasor and lets me know whether we're talking warranty or not.

Nothing wrong with buying second hand..its certainly a great way to save dollars, but i don't think anyone should expect a manufacturer to "make right" a 2nd or 3rd hand product. That's WHY you get to save dollars.......

At any rate, yes we have our policies and rules and all of that. Nonetheless, we try very hard to take things on a case by case basis. If we can reasonably help someone, we will.
Send me a PM!! Cheers and thanks again,
rob

To paraphrase a very famous line from the motion picture 'Avalon'....
What!! "You started without us!" "You carved the turkey without us!!"

That having been said.....You understand, of course, that FMIC enjoys the luxury of an extremely eclectic fan base known to have the capabilities of being a royal pain in the $@! at time. However, we do have a way of keeping 'yuze boyos' minding your "P's" and "Q"'s. Soooo....with that in mind, I just returned from the GC in Coconut Creek where I got a great deal on a keyboard and still find nary a new American Vintage guitar in the lot and, what's more, that yours truly and probably anyone else in these Forum could spins around their sales force with respect to knowledge about Fender gear. I'll be in the Seattle area from the 22nd through the 29th and I'll check out two of my regular GC haunts there, and hope to make the EMP stop this time around. See what condition 'ol Brownie' is in. Have a safe one.

Doc
