Can you ask why they refuse to release a higher end strat in Lake Placid Blue?

Cool guitars! That would be cool to see some basses, too. One of those fretless P-Basses from the 70's would be cool. Either like the one that Sting had in the early days of the Police, or David J. when he was in Bauhaus, did. Don't forget about a Fender VI, too!

About 4 months ago picked up a 62 reissue start. Does anyone know what the difference is between the 62 reissue and the vintage 65?

Hi Brad,

two questions...

Is this new flash coat finish nitro or urethane?

How does the neck on the new '56 compare to the old AMVR'57; thicker or thinner?

Thanks!
B.

Pickup,
logo
neck shape
body contour
veneer board instead of slab

Thanks for the reply! Can anyone do a head to head comparison? Did strats actually change that much between 62 and 65 or are these just recent choices Fender made for the 65? I'm presuming my 62 reissue has the slab fretboard (veneer saves manufacturing bucks). Has anyone compared how the necks differ? And for that matter the pickups?

I also own an original 57 reissue/maple neck (must be around 25 years old). I was surprised at the difference in the neck shape between the 57 and the 62---the 57 is actually a bit thinner and the instrument is overall a bit lighter.

I have a few questions regarding the Jaguar and Jazzmaster.

1. Why no matching headstocks?

2. Why make new witch hats for the Jazzmaster, but not make them accurate?

3. Why eliminate an entire market segment with the new pricing?

These are the questions that offset enthusiasts are asking.

Nice effort but I hope they plan on a '57 Stratocaster. I was of the opinion that the '54, '57, and '59 were the most popular of that decade. That 10/56 neck is too much for me.

I'd also like to know what "New Fender Flash Coat Lacquer" actually means (and I'm not the only one...).

Actually the "veneer" - which is really a round laminate - is more expensive to make than the slab fingerboard. Think about it like this - sure, the rosewood itself is thinner but (and this is a big but) for the slab fingerboard all they have to do is cut the bottom of the rosewood flat and the top of the maple neck blank flat as well. For the round laminate they have to curve the top of the maple neck blank to the same curvature as the fingerboard, and the rosewood itself has to be carved to the proper curvature on both the top and the back of wood. It's a lot more woodworking, and Leo implemented this in mid-1962 because they were having some issues with the rosewood board delaminating from the necks on the slab board models. Of course with modern glues using the slab board these days isn't an issue.

Back in the day of the original reissues Fender wasn't trying to make them accurate; they were going for the "vibe" of the vintage guitars compared to the then-current Strats and Teles. The 1982-1997 '57 and '62 reissues actually have the same neck shape that isn't accurate to either a real vintage '57 or a real vintage '62; they are a thin "small shouldered C" shape that is pretty unique - these were the only Fenders that ever really had that shape. If you really like your original spec '57 you're not alone - David Gilmour liked these necks so much that he had Fender recreate them for his Custom Shop signature Strat.

When they did their update in 1998, Fender got them much closer than the original series. The new series is closer yet, but they did decide to use different years than the original two series (and some of the new years were originally CS Time Machine years).
