I have a dozen Stratocasters and one EPI LP. I always wanted a Gibson Les Paul and actually like the looks of the Black with chrome "Studio" over any Standard or Deluxe.

Any of you have a "Studio" and how do you like it?

had one and traded it. sounded awesome, really beefy. mine would not stay in tune no matter what i did. it was very heavy but that did not bother me too much.

I had a studio Faded for a total of 3 days  the fat neck was nice and it sounded great. but as Jeebus said it wen tout of tune fairly easily, also the fit and finish was very very poor...... very sharp fret ends and it felt like it was sanded with 60 grit and then oiled  ( the painted may be much different) you could also feel a very pronounced seam line between the rosewood board and mahogany ( very annoying) It was one of those impulse online purchases

I owned a wine red LP studio with gold hardware. It was nice sounding and very easy to play. Had no problem with the tuning.

I think the best deals going are used LP DC standards. They'll cost a few hundred more than the LP studio but they're a much better guitar IMO.

Like you, I like the looks of the Studio more than the LP standards. The DC standards are cosmetically closer to the LP studio than the LP standards.

Cheers,

That's not a new complaint. I've always had a little more trouble getting the intonation right on a Les Paul (Gibson or Epiphone) than on a Strat or Tele. I first noticed it decades ago and I still run into it. In particular, lately I've notice the clip on tuner thingie sometimes disagrees with the readings I get when I plug it in (Peterson Strobo-Flip) and yet they always agree on Fender guitars. I can only presume it must have something to do with harmonics and/or humbuckers. I just go with a happy medium and it seems to sound about right.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

If you look for a mid 90s Double Cut, they'll run you anywhere from $750-$1000 for a good one. I found a special edition one for $800, and I drooled kind of.

I have a studio , have always had at least 1 gibson , I love it ! , no problems , except it should have never passed QC , gibsons ain't what they used to be , way over priced , quality is hit , and miss , I think gibson is running down hill , they don't even make amps anymore .

I recently picked up a Les Paul Studio Faded...love the Burstbucker pickups, the neck is great, and I have had NO tuning problems at all. I would highly recommend a studio...if you can live without the fancy binding and shiny finish.

Here is mine and not a bad looking guitar in my opinion...

Thanks to all for your information.

No I like the solid color glossy black of the studio with the silver hardware. My EPI LP is a tobacco sunburst and a nice sounding and playing guitar. but black is my favorite guitar color, acoustic or electric.

The problem with finding a Gibson is finding one. Guitar Center is the only place I know that has them anywhere close to me (and by close 5 hour drives to get to GC in Baton Rouge, a GC I don't like, and 4.5 to get to GC Jackson Mississippi, a GC I love.)

Then picking through the dull sounding ones and shelf scratched and store worn units to find a sweet one.

Perhaps one day.

i regret trading my studio but i agree about QC issues. the one i had was flawless. it really had a ballsy sound. it just refused to stay in tune. what i should have done was swap tuners but i really wanted to keep it original. yep i should have kept it. it was white and had faded naturally to a yellow/white. kinda like my teeth.
i didn't mention that i really liked that guitar. 2 more trades later i ended up with what i wanted all along. a charvel.

Studio's can be good guitars, I just would never order one online. I played a new one at GC recently, and the fret ends felt like a serrated knife edge. But they aren't all like that. I love my '07 Standard and have no problems keeping it in tune. Gibson seems to be letting a lot of minor QC issues out the door instead of catching them in the factory. I don't think it'll be too much longer before PRS replaces Gibson as the dream guitar.

OP...Sorry about missing the shiny part. Can't believe your GC doesn't have a selection...both of the ones here in the St Louis area have plenty...er, maybe that is why none down there?

Not sure how the new ones are QC'd but my 07 was perfect! Good luck finding what you are looking for. One thing I have noticed over the years with the Studios, the white ones ALWAYS seem to weigh a ton!

That happened years ago, IMO. :D

I played nothing but acoustic guitars for 20 years before I bought my first electric in 1990. A Gibson LP Studio…wine red, chrome hardware, ebony fingerboard. I still have it. Hard to believe it’s 22 years old. It doesn’t get much attention since I discovered the comfort of a telecaster. But this thread made me get it out this morning and shake off the cobwebs. She’s still a sweet sounding, solid guitar and will always be my first electric love.
