Hi all,

Today I went to my local guitar shop, and after much deliberation (I really mean, much deliberation  ), decided to buy the Taylor Big Baby BBT. I have been hankering after an acoustic for a while now, and after trying a fender, a couple of freshmens, takamines, yamahas, tanglewoods and pretty much anything else I could get my hands on, I found that the Taylor was the best sounding, and one of the most comfortable :D I'm not sure about the elixir strings it comes with though-I can feel the coating under my fingers like a gunky oily mess-I'll see how long they last out of interest, but I have a set of D'addarios lined up next.

Played a little mash up of styles and a couple of songs I know. I think it actually sounds alright, so I youtubed it! :D

Congrats on the new Acoustic!

I had a Big Baby for a little while. It was kinda homely with the drywall screws in the fretboard and the pressed rosette and the exposed plywood edges but it played alright and sounded fine.

Elixer Strings are all I ever use on my acoustics these days. I won't ever go back to uncoated acoustic strings for everyday use. If I were going into the studio I'd take 4 or 5 packages of Martin SP but for everyday use it's nothing but Elixers.

+1 You nailed it
Almungo , you sure have some sensitive skin! How can you play without hurting?
I think earlier it was the poly-web strings that was used the most. There I could feel the difference to uncoated. But with the new nano-webs, I can't feel any difference . I've tried other coated-d'Addarrios I think- did not like them
BTW- congrats on your new playmate

It's not that the strings are painful or uncomfortable, just that when I play I can feel the oily gunk, the coating, under my fingers. I find that that makes them quite slippery and harder to play more complex fingerings.

I've been using Elixers for more than 10 years now. I assure you the strings are not oily. They are quite dry. Unless oil got on them somehow.

Yes, I agree-the strings are not oily. Perhaps I should have used another word-I find the strings slippery, waxy, and can feel the coating under my fingers causing my fingers to slip on the strings sometimes. It's a personal thing, personally I'll change to standard uncoated strings :D

The guitar is great-I've been playing for a while this morning, really liking the clearness of the sound, and the powerful bass, mixed with a sparkling top end. I was enjoying the tanglewood and freshman, but the taylor is in a different league of sound :D

They certainly are. Easier to tune than some guitars as well due to the clarity. Muddiness can confuse a tuner and even your ear because of the harmonics. When you're ready to upgrade to a bigger Taylor try an auditorium or a concert. They sound even better than the dreadnoughts. The GA3 is a very nice sounding instrument for about $1K or less. The older 2 series used to be good before they moved production of the 2's (and now the 1's, Babies and Minis) to Mexico. Since the opening of the Mexico plant the 2's are made of plywood. If you can find an older used 2 series with a solid top that should be a pretty good buy. When you're ready.

Yeah... When I'm ready and have enough money, that would be great. Thanks for the advice, one day im sure i will follow it. Probably not for a while :D I'm not sure if acoustic is my main thing though-playing classical and electric stuff, as well as school, keeps me busy enough for now:D I certainly am a fan of Taylor now though... :D
