Regardless of whether they were right or wrong, there's no doubt they knew that their government wasn't going to put up with their activities for any length of time. Yet, they went ahead and figuratively speaking, put up a billboard thereby compelling their government to answer the ad with a vengeance. Hence, they will serve every day of that two year sentence literally down to the last second. Sure, it sucks but this is a crystal clear example of how the choices people make in their lives all have consequences.

I think this is a very serious matter that needs attention. They definitively have earned their credits for displaying to the whole world what they mean about their country's political system , and how it works. It does not seem to be very much better than the old USSR..... I think they did an excellent job putting the spotlight on that. Maybe it leads to changes-hopefully

I think they were making a good point in a stupid way.

The point is good in that Putin most definitely is taking Russia further and further backwards in the direction of the authoritarian government intolerant of dissent from which that country has so recently emerged.

Their method was stupid in as much as if their object was to win people to their point of view they've failed abjectly. Their protest has not been widely discussed in Russia and to the extent it has people are largely turned off by what they did, seeing it as a defilement of a sacred church altar. Much as if young people in New York, say, had protested about Guantanamo Bay by invading a church or synagogue in balaclavas and screaming that there’s no God - I suspect they'd be in plenty of trouble and most Americans would condemn them.

People with political views have to decide whether they just want to shout them at the tops of their voices to no particular effect, or if they actually want to change other people's minds. If you want to change someone's mind the first thing you don't do is get in their face.

Been following this for a couple weeks. Kathleen Hanna wasted no time jumping on this bandwagon.... but that's not what's important here.

Their cause and the severity it will require to get anywhere in their current theater (Russia) is not unlike the various Civil Rights movements America has seen. They have a good cause, and like any protest, this DID cause a significant disturbance. They certainly shouldn't have expected to get away completely clean. That said, it should have been a fine at worst.


Also, the medium(s) they use to spread their ideas have their pros and cons. On one hand, punk is loud, it's offensive, it's shocking. It'll grab attention easily. There's also the matter of the uniform/disguises. It makes them stand out, bringing more attention, and the leaderless image ensures that everyone is seen equally and that any newcomers will not be intimidated by any kind of superiors. It adds an element of mystery that makes the average person curious as to what the actual f*** these chicks in weird clothing and neon ski masks are all about. On the other hand, punk music is loud, it's offensive, and it's shocking. It can EASILY drive people away. The uniforms, especially in larger demonstrations, can make them seem threatening in all the wrong ways, and add an element of fear for the average person. They need a bit of revision in their tactics.


Regardless, Russian government being asshats, Free P-us-sy Riot, and f*** their arresting officers.

That's the point, I'm afraid. They made far more waves in our countries than in theirs. And to the extent people noticed in Russia they were mostly turned off, so in punishing them severely Putin is appealing to the majority. And the likes of Madonna parachuting in, telling people what's what, and then disappearing off into the distance - that just gets up ordinary people's noses as well, and achieves the opposite of the objective.

I think Floyd (above) put it very well.

Mind you, I doubt there's anything much that's going to make things better in Russia at present. They're in a cycle of craving "strong leadership", not pluralist debate. It all looks a bit bleak.

Unless you're eye-wateringly rich and big buddies with Putin, of course...

You also have to understand that "liberal" politics in Russia are quite a profound thing at the moment. Equality for women or basically any kind of minority is a nearly nonexistent idea to even the most left-wing thinkers. It's quite a depressing situation, but I have to admire the women of P-u-ssy Riot for doing everything they can to at least try and change that, even if their methods are flawed.


In all honesty, I don't think Pu-s-ssy Riot will ever accomplish much. Rather, I think they will be the major predecessor to a real civil rights movement, the catalyst for real change that will occur roughly 15-20 years down the road. What's going on with them right now is fairly comparable to the racial tensions that were rising incredibly fast leading up to the Civil Rights movement in America. P-uss-y Riot will make a difference, but it'll be in the form of causing the trouble that will lead to the real change rather than the change itself.
