Doc, the image of your "third" group of senior sitting around a pool for a bbq might be the most depressing thing i've heard of all day...
so i'm going to hope that it's not those seniors.... lol

if you're talking high school seniors, i'd just give up now, 99% of them won't have a clue what a guitar is.

And I'm only 27 so I'd agree with what everyone else says about people in their 60s and 70s... just rock out!

How senior are you talking about? 60s, like me and Arjay and a number of others on this Forum? Or are we talking seniors from my perspective, which would mean people in their 80s and 90s?

Well said, Dennis!
Quote:
I currently play regularly (usually a minimum of 4-6 times a month, including today and tomorrow evening) on what we local troubadours call The Senior Circuit. These are generally active seniors who are, yes, in their 80s and 90s. When I play for these crowds I cover everything from 50s Rock & Roll to 50s old-time country (Patsy Cline, Hank Williams) to more modern stuff like Kenny Rogers, Jimmy Buffett (yeah, this crowds likes their Margaritas) and mainstream 80s and 90s country artists like Alan Jackson, George Strait, etc.

If you are playing for us folks in our 60s I think you can stick to pretty much what you play in a mature bar setting - plenty of 60s and 70s Rock and Roll with a little up-tempo country thrown into the mix.

Yup. I'll second all of that. In fact If it's not too outrageous, you can even add some familiar 80's tunes to that second list. The active 60's & even 70's aren't your granddad's seniors! And for the most part are an under served market in most retirement communities, as most music is geared towards the previous generation. Time to move the music up a decade or two. Think Soft Rock Cafe. Hey, I just had cataract surgery and they were playing Jefferson Airplane in the operating room and the Doors in the hallway. (Not that I'm suggesting that. LOL)

IMHO, there's also a third group of seniors - the seniors home/nursing home folks, who are not so active, may be confined to their chairs and range anywhere from 'with it' to seemingly 'unresponsive'. I've played for a few of those gigs. Actually a wonderful and most appreciative crowd. Any fun song that goes back to their youth is greatly appreciated. Especially if you can get them to participate. IE: "How Much is that Doggie in the Window" (no kidding - big hit if you can get them barking along) and even "Ghost Riders in the Sky" if you can get 'em, mooing and yee-haa'ing. I've seen folks in wheelchairs getting help to do the limbo, or learning the Macarena. All the old chestnuts from the 40s to the 60s work, too. They will sing along with "I'm, Henry the Eighth", "Daisy, Daisy (Bicycle Built For Two)", "Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter", "I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts" etc.

If everyone can have fun, that's all that matters. That's what music is about.

Doc
Hey Doc!

It certainly appears that you and I are on the same wavelength. I'm not sure if you and I are the same age (I just turned 63 and I'm still gigging regularly - not on SS either), but I think we have some of the same ideas when it comes to playing for SENIORS. I mostly play for mobile "independent" seniors in retirement communities or apartment complexes and it is surprising how mobile and active retirees in their 80s and 90s can be. If I had to guess most of their ages I'm pretty sure I'd frequently be short ten years or so.

Some of the more popular songs that I do for this age group include, Cab Driver, Kansas City, Mama Tried, Jambalaya, Folsom Prison, Walk On By, Crazy, etc. At my age, these are the people that I think of as seniors and they are very appreciative of my performances. I usually get paid pretty well, too, and that doesn't hurt.

How about some surf songs at a pool party. Fun songs, easy to holla and dance to like Twist and Shout, I'm Sexy and I Know It, Do the Locomotion. Songs that your crowd will know and sing along to. Wild Thang? Good luck. Have fun.

Hi Dennis. Your songbook reads pretty much like mine. :D

I turn 60 this year. Played in bands thru the 60's, 70's and 80's. Now I write and record songs and just play for fun at campfires, parties etc. Started playing for seniors about 10 years ago when my Mom went into a seniors home. A good friend, also a guitarist, had a family member in the same home. We would grab our acoustics, put on white fedoras, and play as the Capone Brothers (so named by a security guard who thought we looked like bad news). Played for Hawaiian Night, Mexican Night etc. Without a doubt, the least professional performances of my life, BUT some of the most fun.

Now retired, the wife and I spend winters in a mobile home park in the desert. Residents range in age from the late 50s to the active 80 & 90 yr olds that you are talking about. Hard to keep up with them! LOL. This winter, I'm planning Soft Rock Cafe nights at the park for us younger retirees - cause the desert is full of plenty of entertainment for the older seniors, but not much for us newbies.

In answer to the post, here are a few sites that might be of help:
http://www.theguitarguy.com/songs.htm (40's 50's classics)
http://www.classic-country-song-lyrics.com/index.html (country classics)
http://www.jumbojimbo.com/performer.php (this one is more contemporary)
http://www.seniorsentertainer.com/songs.html (several lists of songs suited to seniors)

Have fun.

Doc

Wooly Bully, Louie Louie, Hang on Sloopy,
Stones, Beatles, Chuck Berry, Springsteen,
Gin Blossoms, The Who, Pink Floyd..

Just a footnote. If any of you younger members ever get a gig at my future retire home, just bring your black Strat, trailer load of equipment, and take your best shot at Echoes. I'll turn up my hearing aid and drift away. :D

I play, as mentioned above, for the seniors all the time. And I never, ever, do any Sinatra.

And I have never, ever, been ASKED for anything by Sinatra.

Now Im wondering if I misread the post..I thought he meant Seniors as in High School..18 year olds..if infact he means seniors I retract the foo fighters and Neon Trees suggestion immediately lol

Haha, yes, the "seniors" I'm talking about are the older variety. ;)

And I don't know what age ranges these seniors will be. I'm assuming it'd be anywhere from 50-80? I'm not too sure, so I'm going to have to gear up and prepare myself with quite an eclectic mix of songs. :P

Since you're in Jersey, try some Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Eddie & The Cruisers (Cafferty-Beaver Brown) etc.

Have fun!

Hey guys!!

I know I haven't posted on here in a while....but it's good to be back!! :)

Anyway, so I was just hired to play my first-ever payed gig at the local town pool next Wednesday, and it's for a senior BBQ. So, I just want to hear some suggestions about what songs you guys think I should try to learn and play.

I'm wideee open to anything and everything, so whatever you think would get the best response from the crowd would be awesome!

Thanks in advance for any help. :) and: Thanks for all the help and suggestions, you guys!!

Khashoggi, welcome back. You played a senior bar-b-que, I did as well, on labor-day. Hope that your gig was awesome 8)

Chuck Berry....

If you watched Pulp Fiction, you know the song. Listen to the words and you'll understand why its perfect for your gig....
