My experience with these meters has been bad to hardly worth getting one. I'd like to know from those who use them what your experience has been and especially which brand seems to work for you.

Thanks

I bought a cheap one from Wal-Mart. You have to calibrate it before you use it, so you know if its correct. You have to seal it in a container with a lot of salt and some water. Check out this page on humidity and hygrometers.

Turned out mine read 17% high. Now I have a Danby dehumidifier in my basement (where my guitars are). It has a digital hygrometer on it and is pretty close to the manual one.

Oasis Hygrometer and Thermometer

It's about the size of the original old-school iPod Shuffle, fits nicely in a guitar case.

Wow! I never even considered putting a hygrometer in a guitar case.
So, what do you do if the humidity is reading low? ...or high?

I made a couple of DIY guitar case humidifiers a while back. Here's a tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4swYlcrYe_c

I made my holes in the soap case smaller, and made more of them, but it's basically the same idea.

So you just add water to the sponges when it's not humid enough. If it's too humid, you need to find another room to store your guitars, or use a room dehumidifier.
