When I was 16 I used to listen to alot of (old school) rap. I do still listen to the groups I liked back then, but I am way more into music that I discovered in my 20's. In my early 20's I really got into classic rock and in my later 20's I got into ska and reggae. These are the 2 (or 3) genres that I still listen to frequently today. Much more than old school rap.

Well I was 16 in 1991 and you simply cannot find a bigger Nirvana fan then me, however their is so much more music in different styles that I love and listen to on a daily basis.

I would suggest that during our early teen years we are so much more open and susceptible to outside influences and the trends of our peers then any other time in our lives. To many factors that to me at least would dictate when, where, why & how ones number one band is developed.

That being said I guess my answer does fall within your theory lol………..16 - Nirvana till I die………and that should have been when I was 27

well that makes sense, I was a big Nine Inch Nails, Megadeth and Alice in Chains fan back around age 16-20 and they are still my top 3 favorite bands, My favorite Megadeath albums are "Rust in Peace" and "Countdown to Extinction" all released around then.
even though my overall taste has changed a bit, i still LOVE those bands more than anything else,. I am a big tool fan also but that wasn't until 94 95 area, I never was into Nirvana though.

i think you may be on to something here

I disagree.
My taste in music is constantly changing.
When I was 16 I listened to KIϟϟ.
Nowadays I wouldn't even open my drapes if KIϟϟ was playing on my front lawn.

Facing the house.

With strippers.

I'd open all the curtains and windows and get everybody something to drink.

I'd sneak out the back door and hop on the bike and throw up gravel down the back alley with my rear tire as I sped out of there so fast on my way to see somebody with talent.

Talent aside, KISS is a fun rock band, plus with added eye candy...what a show!

I think your theory has holes in it. When I was youger, I was into Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd. Now I'm all about Justin Bieber. What can I say?

Im just tryin to help I don,t care about KISS anymore. They were good in the mid 70's and after that its kind of a joke but what ever.

I think I mentioned this in an earlier post. I partly agree wit the OP. At least it goes a long way with me....I seem to prefer mid 70's prog - like early Genesis , Yes , Camel , Strawbs, ELP. But I also love my earlier impressions- both Beatles and Stones- Who, Small Faces, Kinks. After the prog period I was into fusion and jazz-rock . Then suddenly into Megadeth , later liked Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins - and much later loving Nirvana even more !
So I don't think your theory is all waterproof .....But I admit- still loving those prog-records...

There is certainly some truth to this. For me, the music I liked in my formative years (from perhaps around the ages of eight to eighteen) still influences the music I listen to today.

The Police were the first real rock band I ever got into, and I still listen to them (albeit a bit less frequently) as I close in on middle age. I was a massive fan of Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who the Talking Heads and Van Halen when I was in high school, and I currently have all of those bands on my iPod.

I've noticed I also tend to gravitate toward newer artists who sound like the bands I liked when I was youger. I've been listening to the group Mystery Jets lately, and they sound an awful lot to me like the Kinks and Blur (whom I've liked for many years now).

That's not to say I can't get into something that's newer and fresher sounding to my ears. I listen to a fair amount of classical music these days, as well as electronic music. But there's no question that those earlier musical experiences significantly shaped my current tastes.
