I've got a friend with, what he says, is an early 70's Twin Reverb, Blackface, with a master volume. If my memory serves me, didn't the blackfaced Twin run until 1968 or so?, then it switched to the Silverface, and the master control knob was added in the early 70's? (1973). The guy has put a set of JBLs in the Twin making it well over the 100 lb mark. I'm considering buying it from him-it's in mint condition with the original cover and footswitch included. He says something over a grand would be fair, which seems cheap to me. Can anyone correct me on my dates?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum-move it if you need to.

Silverface cosmetics began to appear in the spring of 1967 and were formally introduced in the 68-69 catalog. The master volume control was added around mid-year 1971 (the push-pull boost a couple of years later).

So my question is-
Does he in fact have an early 70's Twin Reverb as he states, or is it a modded unit with the blackface added as well as the Master volume?

From 1980 to 1982 they went back to blackface cosmetics. They didn't have any other changes from '79 specs so they had master volumes and ultralinear transformers. (In '82 they replaced the TR with the Twin Reverb II, also with blackface cosmetics.)

Most likely you're friend is confused and it's an early '80s model.

+1

That's the only scenario that makes any sense to me.

Which JBL's did he install? The alnico D120's and K120's are worth ~$250 each but the ceramic E120's are more like $100 each. The later M series are much less desirable/valuable.

He didn't say which series JBLs he put in. It's an early 80's Twin Reverb with casters, cover, JBL's and in Tweed, all for $1000. I think I'm pullin the trigger on this one. Now I need to find me a nice MIA Strat with some noiseless pu's and a tweed case, and I'll be set.

First it's a blackface and now it's a tweed?

Gotta be one of them limited-edition Fender "Chimera" amps.

Fender doesn't make changes at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve. They changed to blackface cosmetics sometime during 1980 and discontinued the Twin Reverb (replaced with the TRII) sometime in '82.

Actually from what I've read, the blackface cosmetics became optional in late 1980 and then standard from late 1981 until the original silverface line was finally discontinued.
