For the life of me, I can't seem to get how to copy or even come CLOSE to this sound. And I'm not even talking about the voice, which I'll get to in a sec. That really stringy, twangy sound?

And as far as the voice, is this something you are born with, or is it practiced? I find Johnson's voice so raspy and haunting, perfect for gospel blues.

Also, general tips for replicating sounds thread!

Thanks,

KT

I figured to make this thread more useful, whenever someone has a lick or piece or something that they want to get down, but can't, they can bring their issue to this thread and the forum members who visit this thread could help them out, even going so far as recording themselves doing said part! It would be a pretty cool resource for the forum, I think.

Thanks,

KT

Start by trying a slide.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

yep get an old parlor acoustic, and a beer bottle, and you'll be there in no time. Also you'll probably need to be oppressed by the man!

these are dobro guitars.. you can get one of these. some are square neck and are played like a pedal steel the round neck is what you want. the jay turser example is very good for an electric version. the metal body ones specially the tricones are expensive.

if you have a line 6 variax there is a program built into it that emulates this sound pretty well. you wont get that sound from a normal acoustic or electric guitar,

That's settled , then
But don't forget the OP's general intention here:

Respect for the intentions - SBLS seems to have caught the idea.
Personally , I don't feel the need of a 'resource bank' , but that's just me -a stubborn oldie. I just tweak and play
