I've saved a milk crate full of lp's...the best of my collection and sadly, it has sat in the storage area of my basement for about 20 years now. Last fall I found them and my old turntable and pulled them out with the idea of playing them and digitizing them as well; however the rubber belt on my turntable had become brittle and broken, so no joy as yet.
My eldest son was looking at the albums though, and really liked a number of the dust jackets....he wants to frame them and put them on the walls of his room 8) He said that I could keep the records....what to do :? ??!!

tell him to take them to kinko's and have copy's made  the sleeves are a very important part of the record experience, also its no fun thumbing through 50 or so records trying to read the labels to identify them

I have a pretty decent collection of 33's and 45's. I started to digitize them with the intent of selling the vinyl to make room. I got about 15 CD's burned before I decided I liked listening to the vinyl too much to get rid of them. I guess my daughters going to have to deal with them some day.

Perhaps a visit to amazon is in order(Holidays are coming), there are a few turntables that are set up with usb connections, perfect for the digital conversion of your lps.
The"dude" has the right idea about Kinkos and keeping the covers and records together, some things should never be tampered with.
Cheers,
John.E

Especially at my age with my reading glasses!
You're quite right...He can have the dust jackets eventually as part of my estate, but not before
It's so different nowadays .....careful, must avoid dinosaur pitfall ....with itunes and downloaded music...no big cover art albums to ponder. The one thing I'd forgotten about lp's was just how much a milk crateful weighs...heavy suckers!
Hi John...
I have been looking at the usb o/p turntables, but have decided to first try putting a few rubber bands onto my platter (the red ones found on heads of lettuce look promising!) and see how that goes...I'll buy a microphone preamp unit to boost the signal....I've been thinking about buying the preamp for a while now, and this gives me what I think is the clinching argument to lay before my wife :)
cheers,
Alex

Belts can be had for under $10 for most turntables. if you tell me the make and model table you have i can find you a belt online somewhere. the belt for my old B&O RX 2 was only $8 and some change.

It's a Realistic Lab-210. I bought it when my Acoustic Research turntable got broken during a move and i had made the transition to CD's (and cassettes!...got a drawer full of cassette tapes..no groovy art, or if there is it's too small to see well  ).
I decided to get a moderately priced turntable and record some of my lp's to cassettes to play in the car.
Thanks for your advice...much appreciated. I'd looked around a little on-line last winter, but didn't get very far, and then I discovered the red lettuce rubber bands! I put one on and the turntable rotated, but I haven't gotten around to putting a load (an lp) on it and see if there's any wow or flutter.
cheers,
Alex

I still have 500+ vinyl LPs in five big boxes. Most of mine date from the 60s and early 70s. I went through most of them last year and with the help of a USB turntable, I converted some of the rarest (that never made it to CD release) to digital on my computer, then burned them to CD for the truck.

I just got my old vintage (bought it while in Vietnam) Dual turntable back from a friend and stranger yet, I just recently was going through some old Army records (the paper kind) and I found the original receipt for that same Dual turntable. I've gotta get that sucker set up again soon and start spinnin' those old discs.

I've thought about selling some of the more valuable LPs, but I think it's too much work and too subjective to determine the condition for selling on eBay.

I fully agree with the problems of evaluation - I decided to simply keep the ones I liked (and some I thought were irreplaceable) and gave the rest to a friend who had a music store and was selling used lp's as a sideline.
My brother bought a usb turntable a year ago and has been converting his vinyl collection to digital format, but told me that it is way more time consuming than he originally thought, if you save the tracks individually and label them. What's your experience?
Regards,
Alex

Update to my treasure trove of Records I decided that since I have moved them many times throughout my life..Okay I lied My hubby moved them they are heavy haha, I would start to give some of them to people I know would appreciate them..Tonight I gave my entire collection of Zeppelin to my Guitar Teacher who is a Page Fanatic..he was sincerely thrilled..maybe that will mean less scales..haha..gave my Beatle collection to a good friend who is a Beatle Maniac..and he has already framed and hung in his den. I had a blast and I think Im going to continue paring down the collection to places they will get loved instead of staying in tubs for another 30+ years.

Good plan!
That's sort of what I tried with my ( i thought!) best friend who had the music store. Believing in Karma, I thought that not only would I become a better, more worthy individual, but also i might get a serious discount on a vintage guitar at some point in the future. Discount didn't happen, not sure about the better individual part :? I think that my thoughts, being unworthy, had a deleterious effect.....
cheers,
Alex
