Sorry, no scissors :P

I used to rest my pinky on the pickguard to stabilize my hand. Now I'm trying to play without constantly being in contact with the pickguard (not sure if that's a bad thing, though).

Most sources online and offline tell me that the fingers that aren't holding the pick should be open. Well, I've noticed that I always make a fist when holding a pick; with my fingers tucked in.

Is there really a "correct" way among these two?

How do you guys hold your picks?

There is no right or wrong way. I have a shortened trem arm, so 90% of the time my hand is on that. the other 10% i'm probably muting the strings, but I am always on the trem arm, thats why I shortened it.

Try this, kid.

Stoop down in front of your amp and stick your ear right next to the speakers.

Now turn it up to where the hairs on the nape of your neck vibrate and rip off a few rowdy riffs.

You hear that......?

That's your speakers, reproducing whatever licks you've chosen to play.

They don't give a damn how you hold your pick.

AND NEITHER WILL YOUR AUDIENCE.

Bottom line?

Place your picking hand in whatever manner feels comfortable to you yet lets you access any and all picking techniques you've a mind to use. Rock and roll is more visceral than intellectual -- don't try to over-think the issue.

Rawk on!

If you youtube any of the big guns you will see every single one of them have a slightly different pick hold..Im sure there is some "technical" perfect way but no one listens..lol..personally I have a decades old habit and hit the back of my index finger to the point it is worn crooked. dont sweat the small stuff just have fun!

P.S..Arjays Quote.."Rockin Roll is more visceral than intellectual" is perfect
