bluesky, are familiar with ax84.com? There are numerous experienced amp builders on there that can answer any question you might have about amp building. It's an amazing resource.

The thought of building amps continually tickles my brain. My dream is to get into volume production and figure out a way to make affordable, quality, US made amps. But at this time I don't even have a shop.

Oh, I'm already a member of several amp building and DIY forums. :D

Understand what you are saying, but I don't want others to turn this thread into a political discussion. If that happens I will ask Brad to lock it.

SK I'm so sorry about your mom and possibly your dad,
When I was young my dad lost his greyhound job, back then
early 80's my dad was making over 14 or 17/hr. the union had
them picketing for a month wo pay. It technically sold and
went under new mgt. as a loophole around the union's agreement.
So every one was laid off and had to reapply my dad was offered
5 or 6 hr.
Needless to say my dads pride left him searching for a job
after job after job .
What that taught me was how important it was for me to get
an education and never fall in that predicament again.

Bluesky are you an electrical engineer or mechanical by trade?

Electrical engineer by degree, systems engineer by trade. I have worked with a lot of MEs and know enough to get myself in trouble.

Clearances may help you find work because they go with you not the job, TS even with Sensitive Compartmental as high as you can go is good in five year increments. Have knowledge.

I'm very sorry for you, Super Kid and his parents, the others who lost jobs--and all of us.

Here is why it's happening: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Z9WVZddH9w.

The real US unemployment rate right now is about 40%, counting those who have given up looking or who are "underemployed" like you (and me). Will be 65% by 2020.

It's a new era. The 50 year post WWII party based on a house of cards financial system and seemingly limitless oil is ending.

Google a world population graph and note how it goes vertical in just the last 100 years, the age of oil. From 1 billion to 7 billion people in only 100 years.

EXCUSE ME! I very clearly asked that this thread NOT be turned into a political discussion. I WILL have it locked if that is what it becomes.

In your opinion. That this not the intent of this thread. You want to discuss human reality, start your own thread.

Actually the unemployment rate is about 14.7% counting those who have abandoned search do to current lack of openings. Factor in those who are under employed is about 18.2% which is a sad state of affairs for the U.S. Unemployment levels for for 2009, 10, 11, 12 are among the highest in U.S. history going back to 1948 except for the years 1975,1982, 83 its bad and not getting better for the middle class. We have been let down and people need to look at why! Forget political crap we need a real change so that business wants to stay home and give Americans jobs, or we need to look at America and what we have allowed it to become in the last 64 years since 1948.

That's exactly what I am too Bill, but over here we are labelled "Mechatronic Engineers" because it describes the Electrical/Electronic/Mechanical/IT aspects of the work we do as a whole.

By the way, is the information still classified if you are getting laid off. Surely the information you have in your brain can no longer be controlled by the company who is disposing of you. Your brain is not a piece of document that you can leave behind. I do understand that you can't go posting it all on Forums and newspapers but do your close friends not get an insight to your line of work?

Bill,

Reading about your layoff truly sucks. It never ceases to amaze me how greed is so universally rampant where "The Suits" will discard talented, experienced and dedicated people like yourself because they must squeeze every stinking dime their way. Further, where throwing families lives into turmoil isn't even a consideration, let alone a concern on their part. On the up side, apprenticing under a bonafide luthier should be mentally therapeutic as well as fun. I don't have the answer but I sincerely wish you the absolute very best to somehow spring back bigger and better real soon!

Well, maybe not good news but neat news.

The bad news: I'm being laid off from my job. My last day is Monday 8/13. I've spent the last 35 years working as a systems engineer as a contractor in the Intelligence community. I have some very high level clearances (some that I can't acknowledge I even hold) and have worked on very black programs for goverment customers that don't exist publicly. I have been looking for a new job for the last 6 weeks and though I have had some promising interviews, no real offers yet. Guess I am just too old and cost too much money. Everybody wants young kids right out of college who don't have a clue as to what a full scope poly really means. Oh, well.

The neat news? I am working part time, while I hunt for a permanent job, for a well known luthier (yeah, this guy is an honest to goodness luthier, not just a "guitar tech) who custom builds some absolutely fantastic guitars, both acoustic and electric. I don't want to name him and risk upsetting the mods, but if you want to check him out, shoot me a PM and I will give you his website URL.

:D

I'm saddened by this news; you are one of the members of this forum whose posts are timely and informative and in a perfect world, would never have such a challenge imposed.
But....perhaps this is the sign that your talent as an electrical engineer is to be used to create amplifiers (guitar effects as well??) and give you the satisfaction of following your heart with the added bonus of being able to talk more openly about what you are doing.
Starting over and building up a business is not an easy thing to do, but I know that you know that as well. I did this once, but I was in my 20's and times were very different in the early 70's...I had way more energy :)
Best Regards,
Alex

Classified is classified until the government says otherwise. The type of work I have done will get you sent to prison for a long, long time if revealed. My wife does not even know what I have done for a living nor the places I have been to for work.
