I went to a friends place and he has a home studio setup with more software than i can list.... among this software was auto tune. I talked him into showing me how it worked and we played with it for a bit just goofing around.

once we set the goofing aside, he showed me the serious applications of it by playing an original voice track then the same track run through the program. on that track he spent hours tweaking on some chart prior to this. when its used in a non "rapper" application the results are fantastic  BUT after hearing the tracks side by side I can now hear when an artist has used it on their voice in a song. (you really notice it during quick shifts in octave)

now that I can identify it, I hear being used constantly in pop music. its sometimes subtle but its being used so much that its scary.

It is very clear to me most "POP" singers are in fact only an attractive face these days.

SO..... maybe there is hope for my singing after all

I heard that the original use of Auto Tune was to find oil reserves by using sound waves.

I actually thought it would be quite useful in building an "Earthquake Machine"
it would be a great tool for matching some intense sound waves to the natural harmonic frequency of buildings  Now all i need is a device that can generate strong enough sound waves to do this

I always thought it was interesting how well auto tune works when people aren't even singing.

Like the news for example...

One band I was in gave in to the lure of Autotune, as our vocalist just couldn't get the pitching right on one track, and doing multiple takes was killing his voice.

The results were spot on, but in the end we preferred his original slightly off key performance - Even though it was used sparsely by a very experienced engineer, the note which had been nudged into place stood out a mile for us.

It's use is pretty extensive these days in the "Pop" world. Makes "pop stars" out of "pretty faces" and some not so pretty ones too.

As far as an "Earthquake Machine"..have you seen Oceans 13?

Used it once on a flat bend. Just bought the note up to pitch. I hate to hear that small part of that song now, it makes my skin crawl.

A terrible invention that has denied talent to favour looks.

A month or two ago I was Ooh-tubing and watching Tina and Ike doing River Deep Mountain high.
After the instrumental breakdown part ol' Tina hits a perfect note so hard, it knocked her over. A gammut of emotions washed over me as I saw this. I remembered singing lessons I'd had and saw why she'd allow such a thing to happen, to really get all the air to expel from her body in one huge push.
Then I thought of pitch correction, cos thats what it is, not auto-tune, it's a mistake correcter. I thought, we'll never see the likes of that again. Never see that raw talent on top of the pops again. A million talented singers lost their jobs to that warbling garbage vocal spell checker. (it all sounds like a vocoder to me now that I recognize it. And I can't not hear it)

I much preferred it when you had to be good to make a song worth listening to, rather than just pretty and smile a lot.

I'm not sure if I'd feel good about using auto tune. I might get singing lessons from my boss' mom. She's a choir director at a local church.

You guys realize that auto-tune will be part of the next big musical trend, right?

AUTO-TUNE SCAT SINGING.

Be ready. I know I'm not.

ahhh i forgot about that part in the movie,
I am mainly talking about basing something on Tesla"s design. I actually experimented extensively on this. the problem I ran into was being able to adjust the output frequency quickly enough to compensate for the refraction of the structure. so i was unable to match the resonant frequency to accelerate the "feedback" inside the building past a certain point. I had better results running multiple oscillators trying to create a Standing wave with 2 and slowly disrupting the frequency with another.
I had decent results on a small scale (models on a table). but anything larger on the ground was futile. the earth simply absorbs to much energy to compensate for.
I never could create a device to generate anything strong enough. ( but if i had a nuclear reactor maybe)

once on myth busters they attempted to do this on a bridge, if i had been there i think we could have brought it down easily  they forgot to take readings of the output wave on the other end of the bridge to compensate for the refraction caused by the waves passing through dissimilar materials. If they had done that it would have done allot more than hum

I think i might pick up where i left off
