What are the differences, if any, between the sound of the bridge pickup, clean, on the strat vs. tele? What about with some grit?
While I'm at it, same question as to neck-only pickup and strat's middle only or 2 or 4 vs middle setting (both pickups) on tele. Please compare and contrast.
*** Oh, I'm talking about stock American Standards.... single coil pickups ***

IMHO, Strat bridge pickup is a bit less clean
and a Tele bridge pickup is a bit more twangy

Plus, there are so many Strats & Teles,
the best way to compare is to compare the
American Standard Telecaster (vs) American Standard Stratocaster.
Each with no extra add-ons. That way, you have the best low end Fender setups.

Agreed. While things like body wood, tone circuit, and the like will all affect tone. IMO, the biggest difference to how they sound is their proximity to the bridge. As a Tele's pick up, I believe (don't quote me, I'm a bassist), is slightly closet to where the strings contact the saddles it gets a "tighter" sound out of the pick up. As was pointed out above, the best way is to pick up one of each of the same series without any "extras". Wether it be an AmStd, AVS, or Classic Series and run them through the same amp with the same settings (I'd recommend 10:30, 10:30, and noon, or 10:30, noon, and noon) on the clean channel.

I totally agree to start with the simplest common denominator of the Tele/Strat

find at local guitar stores.

Then once you decide which one, ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE!!!

That's awesome! The Strat and the Tele straight from the factory are both available in so many configurations it's staggering. Makes me glad I'm a bassist, or I'd be broke. :? So many cool sounds and vibes. Great stuff.

Yes. NONE of the ABOVE are "straight from the factory".
SOME started out as a Fender product and some guitars' genesis are Fender.
Hope I opened your mind a bit with looking for that "right sound".

Come on, gotta use a better word than "gazillion".

I like "cajillion". How about you?

Anyway, I use my left hand to mess with the frets & fretboard
and my right hand to mess with the strings, pick and control knobs.
