I wasn't sure which 'Gloria', there are at least 2 that come to mind...

Here's a quick stab at it:

1. House is a Rockin'
2. Honky Tonk Woman
3. Satisfaction
4. Have I Told You Lately
5. All My Lovin
6. Let It Be
7. Cocaine
8. Gloria
9. Mustang Sally
10. Long Tall Sally
11. Wonderful Tonight
12. Long Train Runnin'

When I used to make sets for my old cover band, I'd write down the first and last chord from each song and pair them up, either matching the same chords (for example, song 1 ends on a G major, song 2 starts with a G major), or finding chords that run into each other well (for example, song 1 ends on an F major, song 2 begins with a C Major). Had some great results with that approach.

I also used to make mini-sets where the music doesn't stop in between songs. After a while I had a little personal rule, the first 3 or 4 songs of a set must run into each other without stopping.

G.L.O.R.I.A......VM. lol

Thanks for the info, makes sense. I'll have to give that some thought when making up the set lists.

We do currently link tunes together, example, Roll Over Beethoven & Johnny B. Goode.

When playing the bars, our objective was always to keep the dancers on the floor. The best program that worked for us was playing 1 slow dance song after every 2 or 3 fast dance songs.

It's also a good idea to open and close each set with an attention getter....in attempt to keep the people there.

I have never bothered too much with key signatures when organizing set lists. I place the highest priority on meter and the type or style of the beat. I try to provide a transition from song to song in terms of how the crowd will dance to them or respond to them regarding high energy, low energy, genre, etc. If I can't accomodate that transition then I will pause for a moment, tell the crowd about the drink specials, poke some fun (gently) at the girl dancing like a retard or the guy staggering in the corner, and then say we're gonna slow things down a bit or speed things up, whichever applies before firing it back up again.

It really depends on a few factors...the venue, the amount of
patrons, how many of them are dancing, how liquored up they
appear to be...

RRR is on the right track, figure out which songs are slow or a little boring and sandwich them in between upbeat numbers.

Miami Mike is right, you have to 'read' your audience too. For example if they look bored, don't play Wonderful Tonight next, even if it's next on the list....

BMW makes a great point about using a short talking break to switch gears.

The Word and the Breath makes an excellent point about doubling the length of your set and choosing songs the rest of the band doesn't know.

Another good one is to group songs together. Notice I put 'Let It Be' and 'All my Lovin' together to form a little Beatles set. You could just as easily group songs by decade of release.

In my old band, we had more than one vocalist, so we tried not to hammer any one singer with 6 songs in a row or anything like that.

My band also, 4 of us sing, Myself and our chic singer sing about 60% of it and the guitar and keyboard player the rest. However even the best laid out set is subject to change. It's good to have a plan, but you have to be flexible. Lots of things can change throughout the night.

Agreed, some flexibility can be a good thing depending on the crowd however you don't want to get totally lost and end up flying by the seat of your pants, throwing the set list right out the window. Some measure of orderliness is preferable, else the gig begins to look like a basement jam session (as opposed to the professionals you're trying to appear to be) with everybody looking at each other for two minutes between songs trying to decide what to play.

I wouldn't. I'd just go and see one the other ten million bands that plays all those songs.

In all honesty, do it like Ali. The start and end of every round, spectacular. The stuff in the middle don't matter much then.
Group em by tempo. Start with impact, end on a high.
