I got away from being too picky a while back. If you think about it, when you listen to a record you're hearing a lot more than just the guitar gear. You're hearing the desk, the mids their distances, desk eq and the room too.
People dismiss it but I reckon it accounts for atleast 70% of the sound you hear.

So these days I just get in the same neighbourhood as the sound I want and play

I realize I am going through that problem right now. I think it's a developmental stage of sorts since I seem to be tinkering more than actually playing. Being I'm just coming back after a long lay off, I really need to practice.

Ah don't be hard on yourself.

Most of us do it, regardless of how long we've been playing. It takes a real concerted effort not to do it.
I suspect the reason is because of how most of us came to the instrument. I heard a song with a certain guitar sound and thought "I want to do that!". So in essence I only ever started playing to emulate some sound I'd heard. It's pretty natural that I'd still want to do that.
However I think it's more important to concentrate more on how you're playing than sounding exactly like so and so. Although being comfortable is more important than anything. So I just try and find a balance between those factors.

That's interesting hou, what was the bias at? 14-15.
I ordered a pair of JJs for my amp, I had these biased at 18 and sounded
brittle, at 24-25 they sound pretty good (on drri).
What tubes r you running

JJ 6V6-S's.

And I'm not sure what you are asking but I'm guessing your suggesting bumping it up to 24-25 and I have a strange feeling you might be right.

you could use this weber calculator, plug in the numbers and gets you there safely.

I don't really use the 70% rule for bias. I just go with what sounds right. I'll measure when I have an amp with two pairs of valves operating with each other. Just to keep both halves of the amp operating in unison.
But aside from that, I won't stick to the 70% rule firmly. I'll happily go as high as 80% or as low as 50%(ish) on my 18watt where it seems to sound better cool.

Reason being I'd rather go through valves quickly rather than put up with an amp I'm not comfortable with. My Jcm800 is set to 80%, nice and squashy.

I'm right at ~78% right now and I think I'll leave it there for now and recheck it in a few days. I was reading around and if I'm playing at low volumes like I am, (4 and under), you can get away with running a little hot on the biasing and to some, is preferred. I don't mind changing tubes. If I get 6 months out of them, I'm cool.

I set my studio up and am working on progressing towards the tone I want for Skynyrd. I'm starting back at basic clean with just a little chorus and reverb and would like some input on the sound. Please don't judge my playing, it seems every time I hit the record button, I lock up. lol

I'll work on the OD and some Skynyrd sounds in a few minutes but first I just wanna make sure I have my "Base" down first.

Thanks.

My ripoff of Zep's "Rover" just using the EQ with the volume cranked up a bit for some OD like nikininja suggested. I kinda like that! :P

Not my playing, but the tones.

Mate you may want to try losing some of the reverb or chorus. The skynyrd sound to me was always pretty basic. But I'm largely unfamiliar with their stuff. I just find them effects mess with the punch of a guitar sound.
Worth a try maybe?

My bad. Those two weren't a Skynyrd sound I was shooting for. Just a "Baseline" to work from. I got side tracked for awhile and will be working on it again.
