Yea, I admit it. I was just playing "Sweet Home Alabama".

For the Skynyrd gurus. I'm looking to get more of a southern rock sound from my gear and I think I have the amp tuned pretty well, so this might be about FX peddles. I current have a Boss BD2 which I think I wasted my money on, and the usual MXR 10 band EQ which I don't use any more and about the only stomp box I currently use is a Rogue Analog delay.

I would like to get a little more, "something" and I'm not sure what it is.

Examples.

Thanks in advance.

Well don't forget that Skynyrd has 3 guitarists and they don't all play the same guitars but they do all rotate the soloing, swapping and interchanging song parts with each other. The one time I saw them play live (long time ago) I was mesmerized by the musical chairs game they were playing with each other. I saw a Strat, a Les Paul and I can't remember what the 3rd player was using. May have been 2 Strats or 2 LPs.

(I'm having trouble with YouTube lately so I can't view your links at present)

And the Gretsch that Rossington plays sometimes. I'm aware of all that. Just trying to go the cheap way and get somewhere close.

BTW, there is a cat on your head.

I use the "Mesa-Boogie Drive" pre-set on my Zoom G1-X amp simulator with a little bit of delay, plugged into any vintage tube Fender. Yeah I know Skynyrd used white-Tolexed Peavey's on stage, but I can get pretty close to the live Collins/Rossington/Gaines vibe in most cases.

You don't like the BD-2? I guess it doesn't suit every style. I love mine though, use it all the time. What is it that you don't like about it? You can get alot of variety from changing the gain and drive, as well as the tone.

Not exactly sure. It might be the way I have it set up. Ill try it again.

I have tried about every setting combo with the BD-2, and I guess I just don't like it. Hard to explain, but it seems to take away from the tone. Like going from a nicely set up tube amp and going back to a cheap SS amp. It seems to break up too easy with a harsh brittle sound and I feel like I am losing individual string definition. But maybe that's just me and OD is supposed to do that.

I'm not much of a pedal guy I guess. I hooked my 10 band EQ and my delay back up and after playing on the different pup positions, I can find some sweet spots I like for certain tunes, but no Skynyrd. The Bucker on my guitar is pretty much useless for me, so my guitar may not be for designed for LS.

Oh well, I think Ill order a good chorus pedal and take advantage of the single coils to enhance that jingle bell sound that this guitar and Strats are noted for.

Same thing. I didn't like the new pedal. I paid a $182.94 for this new pedal and I didn't like it. Then I remembered something Arjay said about biasing our amps. Too cold and it will sound "Brittle, Mechanical etc". That's the sound I was getting I think, so I checked my bias setting and I was at a little under 50% plate dissipation when I should be near 70%.

Updates tomorrow.

That's mighty cold, Gary.

Report back once you have the amp dialed in.

And check the tone -- again -- using each of your pedals, including the new one.

You may be pleasantly surprised.

Arjay

Just use the 10 band eq. So simple it's unreal.
Put it inbetween the guitar and amp, set flat. Use the volume control as a boost. Add mids in the high mid end.

I thought Skynyrd used Plexis back then? Dunno I'm not that much of a fan but thats what I hear in the sound. A strong high mid sound on the solos.

In photography they call it "Pixel Peeping". I might be getting a little TOO picky!

Well definitely warming up the bias helped. nikininja, I did that and it pretty much nailed what I was looking for. Like you said, it's so simple, I overlooked it. I got the LS tones I was looking for when playing songs like Sweet Home Alabama, Free Bird and just about any Neil Young song I like. I just wanted a little something, I dunno how to describe it, "Bite" I guess.

Then I played with the new Catlinbread Formula #5 pedal a little and for songs like The Rover by Zeppelin, it works very well. :P I'm gonna try hooking up the BD2 next to the Formula #5 and see what I get with that.

Pixel peeping.

When I used to use a 5 mega-pickle point and shoot camera, if I got a shot I was good. When I advanced up to the 7D, then I really questioned my work. Same thing with guitar gear. Back when I had a Lab Series amp, or the Peavey SS, or the Mustang1, I just hooked it up and settled for what it was. Now that I have a little better gear, I'm really looking harder on what I can do to reach the ultimate tones.

I got away from being too picky a while back. If you think about it, when you listen to a record you're hearing a lot more than just the guitar gear. You're hearing the desk, the mids their distances, desk eq and the room too.
People dismiss it but I reckon it accounts for atleast 70% of the sound you hear.

So these days I just get in the same neighbourhood as the sound I want and play
